'The Curse Of Oak Island' chronicles the efforts of Rick and Marty Lagina, and the Fellowship, as they struggle to unravel the mysteries of the island. Apart from treasure hunting that hasn't borne much fruit, the show explores legends and tales about the island. They're still hoping to find the vaults of buried treasure on the island, something researchers and historians have been trying to do for the past 200 years. Artifacts such as pickaxes, coins and crosses suggest that there was intense activity on the island before the 1700s, and the Lagina brothers are attempting to put the puzzle together.

What's the story of the 'curse' on Oak Island?

For years, treasure hunters searched Oak Island thoroughly, in the hope that they will be the ones to extricate wooden chests filled with gold. The tale behind this manic search began centuries before the show ‘The Curse Of Oak Island’, in 1795,  when young men discovered a depression in the ground beneath an old oak tree on Oak island, leading them to the conclusion that there’s treasure buried there.

The hunt continued in the late 1800s, with little success but more ferocity. And then began the ‘curse’, where humans perished in the hunt for buried treasure. According to the legend, in order to solve the Oak Island mystery, seven had to die. At the moment, six have died in the efforts of treasure hunting.

However, recent research suggests that 14 people have died on the island, 7 of whom were actively hunting treasure:

1. Thomas Duncan Smith died on February 19, 1803, on Oak Island
2. William Smith died on August 2, 1830, on Oak Island
3. John Smith died on February 27 of Scarlet Fever on Oak island
4. James Smith died by accident on February 4, 1840
5. Ann Floyd died on December 19, 1852, on Oak Island
6. Rachel Smith died on April 5, 1854, on Oak Island
7. John Smith died September 20, 1857, on Oak Island
8. Unknown worker died in a boiler explosion on Oak Island in 1861
9. Maynard Kaiser died on March 26 1897 in a fall down a shaft on Oak Island
10. John McGinnis died on February 4, 1939
11. Robert Restall Senior died on August 17, 1965, on Oak Island
12. Robert Restall Junior on August 17, 1965
13. Cyril Hilt on August 17, 1965
14. Carl Graeser August 17, 1965

So, has the 'curse' been fulfilled or are the members of the Fellowship playing right into the hands of the island? Well, it depends on what you believe.

'The Curse Of Oak Island' airs on History Channel, Tuesdays at 9 pm.
