'Supergirl' Season 5: 'Tremors' may have pushed in too many unwanted subplots into Episode 7

The Malefic-J'onn reconciliation and the Alex-Kelly relationship plot looked more of a force fit when there could have been more emphasis placed on Leviathan or the Kara-Lena storyline.

Well, yes and no. 'Tremors' gave the world the much-needed origins of Leviathan. However, the episode might have moved its focus from Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Lena (Katie McGrath) and that move received mixed responses from the fans. On a personal note, as mentioned in our review, the episode heavily, and rather urgently, jumps into Kara finding out the truth behind Lena's plans.

Even so, these two storylines could have had some equal screentime dedicated to them, but the Malefic- J'onn plot where the two brothers seemingly reconcile seems to have been a bit of an extra addition and quite frankly, unnecessary. While it was shown that J'onn has been grappling with the Malefic issue since episode 1, this rather filler of a storyline could have been pushed to a later episode considering how important Leviathan has been to the series' plot since season 4's finale.

The other storyline that was probably a force-fit was that of Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai). While it is a moving sequence, it was pretty uncalled for considering the DEO was fully focussing its efforts on finding as much as they could about the Leviathan. In a way, it is understandable that we'd be seeing more of the Leviathan over the course of the series and this was probably a setup episode that would give out more insights on the organization over the season.

However, it does look like the season has dragged the Leviathan origin long enough. With Acrata, and the 'Crisis' still having a more concrete role, the season hopefully should shed more light on the important subplots rather than add fillers.

What are your thoughts on 'Tremors' bringing in additional subplots?

'Supergirl' season 5 airs Sundays at 9 pm on The CW.
