‘Supergirl’ is coming to an end. The CW and producers Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions just announced that the drama series starring Melissa Benoist will conclude with the upcoming sixth season, set for premiere on The CW in 2021. It is the second series from The CW’s DC Arrowverse to come to an end following 'Arrow', which wrapped its eight-year run last season.

Benoist, who plays the titular lead (also known as Kara Zor-El or Kara Danvers), in a heartfelt Instagram post, also announced the end of the run. “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless,” wrote Benoist. “She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me the strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

She further wrote, “I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

The reaction to Benoist’s post was full of heartbreak on Instagram. One fan commented, “What the actual f*** I’m losing my first comfort character ever.” Another fan said, “Kara is my all-time favorite character and I couldn’t ask for a better person to portray her. Thank you for bringing kara to life so beautifully for so many years! You understand her on such a deep level that as a big fan of the comics you’ve made my heart so happy by watching you on the screen. what a journey it has been! Thank you for all your dedication to this very special character. you’ll always hold a special place in my heart.”

Another fan said in the comments, “I'm so sad but so grateful we have had so many wonderful seasons with Kara Danvers. I was Supergirl for Halloween three years in a row (not even counting when I was younger) Thank you for an incredible show and an even more incredible hero. I will miss this show so much but I’m looking forward to this final season.”

Production on 2020-21 broadcast series was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. ‘Supergirl’ had also reportedly been targeting a later start of production to accommodate the pregnancy of star Benoist. Per Deadline, the series is slated to begin filming in Vancouver on September 28, pending a deal with the local unions to comply with SAG’s testing guidelines.

‘Supergirl’ debuted in October 2015 on CBS before joining The CW lineup for Season 2 in October 2016. The most recent Season 5 also starred Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair and David Harewood, with special guest star Jon Cryer.
