'Stargirl' trailer releases, introduces JSA, Starman and the girl who will inspire a new generation of superheroes

The Justice Society has fallen, and it's up to a new hero to take up the Cosmic Staff and save the world

It will be a whole new multiverse in the aftermath of 'Crisis on Infinite Earths,' and the world will need a new generation of superheroes to save it. The CW has released a trailer for 'Stargirl,' a new series releasing in the spring of 2020, starring Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, who will be taking up the Starman legacy as the next wielder of the Cosmic Staff.

There is a lot to unpack in the trailer, which features the Justice Society — unfortunately not for long, as they are all taken out by a mysterious force, including Starman (Joel McHale), who with his dying breath tells his sidekick, Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), that "the Justice Society must live on." That, of course, is much easier said than done, and it seems like the Justice Society is well and truly lost — until Pat's stepdaughter, Courtney, discover's Starman's Cosmic Staff, which lights up at her touch.

The Cosmic Staff doesn't just light up for everyone, and Courtney seems more than happy to take up the Starman legacy with the help of her stepfather, as Stargirl. The trailer also features her in full costume, using the Staff to take out a pair of criminals from the hood of a car.

The trailer released just after the latest episode of 'Crisis on Infinite Earths,' during the 'Crisis Aftermath' series with Kevin Smith. Stargirl has been reported to be making an appearance in the 'Crisis on Infinite Earths,' but with the crossover on break, fans will have to wait until at least January 14 to see her first live-action appearance.

Created by Geoff Johns and Lee Moder, Stargirl first appeared in 'Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.' #0 in 1999 as Courtney Whitmore, and first suited up as Stargirl in 2003 in 'JSA: All Stars' #4. She was a key member of the Justice Society of America as part of a new generation of superheroes being mentored by the old. From the looks of the trailer, his costume is impressively comics-accurate.

'Stargirl' comes to The CW in the spring of 2020.
