Patty Jenkins is all set to foray into the 'Star Wars Universe with 'Rogue Squadron' for Disney and Lucasfilm. With this, she becomes the first woman to direct a 'Star Wars' film in history. The announcement was made during the Disney Investors Meet on Thursday, December 10. This would mean, there is hope after the damp squib that 'Rise of the Skywalker' was. While there isn't a lot of information available on the film yet, the release date is fixed and that is a start. 'Rogue Squadrons' announcement comes just days before 'Wonder Woman 1984' is released on HBO Max.

It wasn't just the movie that was announced. Some of the live-action series parts of the slate include 'Rangers of the New Republic' from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni that is set during the same timeline of 'The Mandalorian', a Rosario Dawson starring 'Ahsoka', a new Landi Calrissian even series titled 'Lando' from Justin Simien, and Russian Doll Leslye Headland's mysterious 'Star Wars' series titled, 'The Acolyte' which is being dubbed a mystery-thriller series.

Release date

'Star Wars: The Rogue Squadron' releases in December 2023. The film joins Taika Waititi’s 'Star Wars' movie which is currently in development. 

Plot

'Rogue Squadron' will follow a group of fighter pilots as they band together through thick and thin in a classic tale of defending the good well against evil. According to The Verge, it’s a fan adored part of the Star Wars universe — one that was prominently featured in a popular Nintendo 64 game. Rogue Squadron was founded and fearlessly led by Wedge Antilles, a skilled pilot who appears in 'Star Wars', 'The Empire Strikes Back', 'Return of the Jedi' and 'The Rise of Skywalker'.

Writer/Director

Director Patty Jenkins attends the European Premiere of 'Ready Player One' at Vue West End on March 19, 2018 in London, England.

Patty Jenkins of 'Wonder Woman 1984' fame will helm the project. For her work on the pilot episode of 'The Killing', she received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and won the Directors Guild of America award for Outstanding Directing in Dramatic Series. In 2017, she occupied the sixth place for Time's Person of the Year.

Trailer

There is no trailer, but there is a heartfelt introduction by Jenkins about her new project. The director recollects the time her dad flew fighter planes and eventually his death in service of the country. Jenkins talks about always making a fighter pilot film and the right opportunity came in the form of 'Star Wars: Rogue Squadron'.
