Life can get dull on the Lower Decks and even straight-edge employees like Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) find ways to let off a little steam every now and again. As far as upper management is concerned, however, this looks starkly like a lack of professionalism and Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) and her team are starting to wonder just how efficient their crew really is.

When the USS Cerritos is called in to deal with a mysterious defunct cargo ship, upper management is going to come into conflict with the lower deck's ensigns and you can bet that Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) will somehow be at the heart of it all.

The preview for the next episode shows the various ways that the lower deck ensigns find ways to make their jobs fun. Introducing a new character to join Brad Boimler, Beckett Mariner, D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), the ensigns are seen engaged in various activities to make life on the lower decks a little more fun.

Whether they're just humming warp engine sounds in a group or chugging down cheese sauce straight out of the fabricator, the officers of the Cerritos are not pleased with the crew. Reaction to their employees' behavior range from Jack Ransom's (Jerry O'Connell) confused and concerned to T'Ana's (Gillian Vigman) rage when Mariner accidentally knocks the Caitian medical doctor into a bowl of nacho cheese — impossible to get out of fur.

The ship's mission this episode will be to recover the cargo from an NCC-502 crashed shipment and there's a lot of buzz on deck as to what its contents might be. Captain Carol Freeman is hoping to score some prestige points in this recovery operation which means she's going to want her crew at maximum efficiency and competence.

She's going to have a shorter fuse than usual for the unprofessionalism of Mariner and her friends. Could this be the episode where Carol finally has an excuse to fire Mariner from the ship? The official 'Star Trek' website has released a short preview for the next episode which you can watch here.

This episode of 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' airs on September 10 on HBO Max.
