'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 3: Will Captain Pike make a cameo? Here's why we need to see more of Anson Mount

It has been a year to remember for Trekkie fans. We saw the polished Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) indulge in inter-galactic battles with a new crew after almost two decades, promising a terrific second season. 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' wrapped up its first season with a bang and now it's time for some more Trek treats, as 'Discovery' returns with Season 3.

It's going to be a lot different this time around, as Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her resilient crew have jumped 930 years into the future in order to escape Control, a lethal, sentient artificial intelligence program created by Starfleet's secretive Section 31. Discovery's computer processed an incredible amount of data from their encounter with The Sphere, which was a lifeform that had lived for more than a thousand years.

The Sphere had immeasurable amounts of information on planets, civilizations and technology from all over the universe. Just before its collapse, The Sphere gave Discovery its data. However, Control wanted to exert control over the universe and the jump into the future was the only way to get Discovery away from Control.

It's going to be a completely new world this time, replete with wholly different characters. One character whose profound presence might be missed is Captain Pike (Anson Mount) At the end of Season 2, Captain Pike sticks to the story of a tragic accident, explaining the disappearance of the ship and its crew. While this ties into 'Star Trek: The Original Series', it might separate the first two seasons of 'Discovery' and what might follow from now.

The scene where Pike, Number One and Spock stand on the bridge of the Enterprise seems like a goodbye to the characters. However, if we dare to hope, we might just get a Pike spin-off and see more of him or at least settle for flashbacks and special appearances. Too much to ask? Nevertheless, there has been talk about Pike being in the third season, though it's curious to see how he'll fit in.

For the unversed, Pike is a central figure in 'Star Trek' lore. He was on three Federation ships before spearheading the USS Enterprise as Capt Robert April's first officer. Later, he became Captain and was given command of the Enterprise (April was promoted to commodore) where he was the ship's commanding officer for 15 years before the command of the Enterprise was transferred to James T Kirk.

Pike is considered one of the most decorated Starfleet captains. However, he has a rather tragic history in Trekverse. He suffered a rather drastic accident been abducted by Talosians and experimented on that rendered him paralyzed, finally. 'Star Trek: Discovery' airs on CBS-All Access on Thursdays.
