‘Squid Game: The Challenge’: Producers under fire after contestants sue Netflix spin-off series over ‘war zone’ like filming conditions
LONDON, ENGLAND: Since the commencement of filming for the reality show 'Squid Game: The Challenge' in early 2023, numerous reports have surfaced about the challenging conditions on set.
Contestants reported enduring hours of filming in extremely cold weather in the UK, to the extent that some of the cast required medical assistance.
Envision this: participants had to remain in a freezing airplane hangar for an extended period, maintaining frozen positions as part of the game. The temperatures even plummeted below zero!
One contestant described the experience as feeling "like a warzone," and others were so distressed that they left the set in tears.
Another participant mentioned to The Sun, "Even if they started feeling really, really cold, people wanted to stay as long as possible because there was a lot of money at stake."
A contestant compared the show to a "Bear Grylls survival show," as reported by Variety.
They even remarked that had the production team forewarned them about the extreme cold conditions, they might have reconsidered participating.
The contestants were told the game would last about two hours for filming, but in reality, it turned into a nearly seven-hour ordeal for some.
Where was 'Squid Game: The Challenge' filmed?
The whole series, 'Squid Game: The Challenge,' was actually filmed in the UK. They did most of the filming in Wharf Studios, using all six connected sound stages to recreate the Squid Game.
The initial game, the eerie rendition of 'Red Light, Green Light' featuring the creepy robot doll, was filmed at Cardington Studios. This location is also situated in the UK, specifically in Bedford.
Cardington Studios is way bigger than Wharf Studios, and it was the perfect spot to handle all the nearly 500 players involved in that part of the show.
‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ producers broke ‘all rules’ by introducing new games
Producer Stephen Lambert, who helps make the show, said it was a huge challenge when they started filming.
He explained, "We broke all the rules. You're not supposed to have more than 20 players if you want to make a good unscripted show. Well, we had 456. So, you know, that was a really big challenge," he told TODAY.
It's like they decided to throw all the usual rules out the window to create something special and different.
However, it didn't sit well with many, like the contestants themselves, who openly expressed their disappointment throughout the show whenever a new challenge or game was introduced, as most felt betrayed.
