Soyeon copyrights plagiarized song ‘SUN’, Ateez fans say ‘she’s trying to make money’
Back in December 2021, (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon had gone viral for being a strict mentor on the K-pop survival show ‘My Teenage Girl’ and called out the audience for biased votes. Knetizens had praised Soyeon’s candidness. However, she later went viral for a different reason. During the finale of the survival show, she produced the single ‘SUN’ for the finalists to perform. Unfortunately, it caught attention for being similar to Ateez’s song ‘Wave’. After plagiarism claims, Soyeon and her label Cube released a statement.
Fans of Ateez claimed that the melody of ‘SUN’ was the same as ‘Wave’ and created an uproar on social media to get an apology from (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon. Turns out that ‘SUN’ had indeed sampled Ateez’s song and the producing team Eden-ary was credited. However, according to KQ, Ateez’s label, they shared that Soyeon had not asked for permission before doing so. Cube too released a statement sharing that they were in touch with KQ to resolve the situation. We also had Soyeon apologizing for creating confusion. But it seems that the credits for ‘SUN’ have now changed months later during the copyright process.

Ateez’s producing team not credited in copyright process
After the plagiarism fiasco and apologies in February, Eden-ary was credited for ‘SUN’. However, on June 18, fans noticed that Ateez’s producing team had been removed from KOMCA. A fan found the song copyrighted on the official Korean Music Copyright Association but only Soyeon and her team were credited. The fan who spotted the copyright revealed that they were angry because this means that only Soyeon and those who have been credited would get the royalties for the song. They also questioned that if Cube had resolved the situation with KQ, why did they not add Eden-ary’s name to the official credits on KOMCA.

OP (original poster) had been suspicious since February and had checked for the song on KOMCA during (G)I-DLE’s comeback in March but it had not been copyrighted. But with the song now being credited months after its release, the timing feels off with fans claiming that Soyeon's team belatedly copyrighted the song after the success of her group’s comeback so that the plagiarism issue would not affect (G)I-DLE. Knetz were pretty blunt as they made comments like, “No, why did you remove [Eden-ary’s] name after putting it before?” and “I’m not a fan and I don’t think she will get any royalties for that song so why did she do it anyway?”
‘If sun was some hit song then i'd see your point’
However, on Twitter, Ateez and (G)I-DLE fans are once again at odds with some sharing that it was not Soyeon who applied for the copyright but another company. A (G)I-DLE fan said, “Funky studio is the company that managed to register this song (not even Cube or MBC) but only one woman that takes all the blame for something she didn't handle. In conclusion atiny bodoh.”
Another fan said, “If sun was some hit song then i'd see your point somewhat but wtf does soyeon have to gain from this. let's be serious. it doesn't even have 400k streams on f**king spotify. what money? she apologized and if she's registered, it's probably because it was sorted out with eden.” One wondered if the two labels had decided on it, “Bringing this up again when both companies and artists came into an agreement. if they didn’t we’d hear of it.”

But fans of Ateez are not having it especially since ‘Wave’ holds special meaning as it got the group their first music show win. One fan looked at the silver lining, “So.. Soyeon copyrighted sun and didn't even credit eden-ary...I just hope that all of this mess translated into support for ateez.” Another fan said, “She apologized To her fans. not once did she mention ateez and eden in that half-assed apology and now she’s trying to make money from the song she plagiarized from them.” One shared, “Plagiarism and steal on top of that??? Full crime.”
