LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Kurt Sutter, the creator of 'Sons of Anarchy', is now in charge of the new Netflix western series 'The Abandons', starring Lena Headey from 'Game of Thrones'. 'Sons of Anarchy', which aired on FX from 2008 to 2014, may have been centered on the exploits of contemporary biker gangs, but at its core, it was a neo-Western exploring many recognizable themes from classic western films and TV shows.

With his 'Sons of Anarchy' spinoff 'Mayans MC' now wrapping up on FX, Sutter has decided to focus on an entirely new show, and this time he’s going the literal western route. In the upcoming series, actor Headey will play Fiona, a strong, devout matriarch who, unable to have her own children, adopts four orphans to create her own family.

What will 'The Abandons' be about?

The synopsis for 'The Abandons' states, "As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, “justice” is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law."

Why Sutter seems perfect

It comes as no surprise that after the massive success of the western saga 'Yellowstone', Netflix has decided to dip its toes once again in the same pool. Sutter indeed seems perfect for the project, considering the Western themes explored by 'Sons of Anarchy', a show that repeatedly dealt with generational family quarrels where one is willing to resort to just about anything, including brutal violence – to protect what was theirs. One can only wonder if the upcoming show will get anywhere close to 'Yellowstone' but with Stutter and Headey on the same team, it does look promising to begin with.
