Nobody would have thought 'Snowpiercer' saved its best story for the last. After dishing out nine compelling episodes, the TNT drama gives a hell of a cliffhanger by introducing the daughter of Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) in the final minutes of Season 1 finale. After nine weeks of great storytelling, the series will now go on a hiatus leaving the audience unsure of when it will be back to explain the latest plotline.

Based on the 1982 French graphic novel 'Le Transperceneige' and the 2013 South Korean-Czech film of the same name, directed by Bong Joon-ho, the series is a reboot and portrays the world as an insanely frozen wasteland after a human experiment to cool down temperatures goes woefully wrong. To survive, Mr Wilford builds one of the largest and most complex trains in the world inhabited by the survivors. A mammoth 1001-car carriage that chugs around the globe.

Ahead of Season 2, here's what we know so far:

Release Date

While it was confirmed by Radio Times that Season 2 was done shooting before the lockdown, there is no concrete release date yet. However, with the series landing in May this year, and May 25 on Netflix, chances are the upcoming series might follow a similar pattern and release sometime in May 2021.

Plot

The finale episode of Season 1 titled '994 Cars Long' saw Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) assume control of the Snowpiercer, but the leadership skills were immediately tested when they realize another train is hot on their heels and takes over. Known as Alice, Bennett (Iddo Goldberg) and Melanie realize the train might have Mr Wilford aboard. While it was revealed early on the series that the man was dead, there seems to be a new twist in the tale.

The introduction of Alexandra Cavill (Rowan Blanchard) in the final minutes of the episode serves as the perfect cliffhanger moment. Season 2 might focus on the relationship between Melanie and Alexandra, while Layton may have his hands full with Mr Wilford.

Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) and Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) will reprise their roles in Season 2 (IMDb)

News

Showrunner Graeme Manson hinted to Collider that Season 2 will shake things up between passengers. "When we got into Season 2, we were like, “Well, we’ve never put these two characters together. I love that kind of exercise for the writers’ room, and the writers love that, too. It’s fun to put two opposites together and see what you can find with them."
