A quick recap of 'Schitt's Creek' before it returns in January 2020 for its final season
One of our most favourite things about Pop TV's 'Schitt's Creek' is their wholesome treatment of a dysfunctional family. Technically, going by American television standards, the Rose family is hardly dysfunctional, to say the least. Yet, the moments we recall with vivid fondness are those of the entire Rose family having individual, personal arguments all at the same time and Moira (Catherine O'Hara) misplacing one of her many wigs.
'Schitt's Creek', created by Daniel Levy and his father Eugene Levy, follows the immensely wealthy Rose family - Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (Catherine O'Hara), David (Dan Levy), and Alexis (Annie Murphy) - and their adventures and misadventures in the small town of Schitt's Creek. After being cheated out of their business and money by their business manager, the Rose family is left to survive in a place they could never even imagine - or perhaps they could, and it would make for a nightmarish imagination.
But even as they struggle to sustain life in a space alien to them, it is their idiosyncrasies that has won hearts across the world.
Johnny Rose
The Rose family is an eccentric mix of personalities. Eugene Levy's Johnny Rose is the patriarch of the Rose family. Seemingly in control of things around him, Johnny is really not in control. And as he tries to make the most of the situation, he struggles to get the rest of his family on the same page. And after desperately trying to get out of the nondescript town, starts working along with Stevie (Emily Hampshire) as the co-manager of the Rosebud Motel. The motel undergoes such dynamic a change that at the Regional Hospitality Awards ("The Hospies"), it wins the award for Best Customer's Service in a Motel Under 20 Units.
Stevie
Speaking of Stevie, after delivering a beautiful performance on stage in Cabaret, Stevie is last seen celebrating with the Rose family and the cast of the musical. So what is next for Stevie, the new budding musical star in Schitt's Creek?
When we spoke to Hampshire earlier this month, we asked her the same question - how does her character end in the final season of the show?
Well for one, Hampshire is fully content with Stevie Budd's arc, and promises us the same. At the same time, perhaps love is not on the table at all - "I mean, is love the ultimate thing? Maybe she finds a career!" She also said that even though the ending is "sad", she knows fans will deem it just right.
Moira Rose
Season 5 begins with 'The Crowening' where Moira (Catherine O'Hara) flies to Bosnia for the filming of the Crows movie in hopes that it will help her revive her acting career. By the time the season draws to an end, the Crows movie is shelved and Moira, in the middle of Cabaret celebrations, cowers and escapes in the wardrobe.
Does this mean the magnificent dress she ordered for the premiere night will remain unused?
David Rose
This is a very exciting season for David Rose (Dan Levy) - the man has it all! From a loving and caring life partner to a budding and strong business in Rose Apothecary. After Patrick (Noah Reid) asks him for marriage in an adorable proposal atop a hill, we just knew everything was going to fall into place - despite the red herring surrounding Patrick's parents thrown in the middle.
We cannot commend enough the absence of homophobia on the show and how it is not even something they find worth mentioning.
In the upcoming season, we will see him prepare to tie the knot with Patrick. And we cannot wait for David Rose planning his wedding because we all know it is going to be simply hilarious!
Alexis Rose
After stumbling upon the realisation that she doesn't offer her relationship the same attentiveness and contribution as her boyfriend Ted (Dustin Milligan), Alexis (Annie Murphy) agrees to spend six months with him in the Galapagos Islands as he researches wildlife there.
Ted leaves for the trip in the last episode of season 5 whereas Alexis is due to leave in what will be season 6.
Apart from that, her public relations business, Alexis Rose Communications, has seen the successful stint of the singles night and we can predict her working through season 6. The audience beloved is due to return to Pop TV for its sixth and final season on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 9/8c.
