'Pretty Little Liars' alum Shay Mitchell joins Stephen Amell's 'Baywatch' in a powerful role
Casting updates on the 'Baywatch' sequel series continue to roll in. After 'Elle' star Jessica Belkin was tapped for a role as a series regular last week, Shay Mitchell now joins the ensemble roster. The 'Pretty Little Liars' alum has been cast in a regular role alongside Stephen Amell in the upcoming Fox series. The actress announced the news on Instagram while highlighting a full-circle moment. She shared an image of herself pretending to be a lifeguard in 2017 alongside the news of her casting in 'Baywatch'.
Mitchell steps into the shoes of Trina in the upcoming drama. She is a former lawyer who quit her job at a top-tier law firm to pursue lifeguarding as a full-time career. As per Variety, her character description reads, "Trina is the sharpest mind on Baywatch. Passionate and dedicated, she tends to follow her heart… even if she often uses her considerable intelligence to second guess herself." Other cast members alongside Mitchell include Amell as Hobie Buchannon, David Chokachi as Cody Madison, Belkin as Charlie Vale, Hassie Harrison as Nat, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, and Brooks Nader as Selene, the non-nonsense captain of the Zuma Beach lifeguards. The title will see Hobie, now a captain, navigate through several ups and downs after Charlie, the daughter he never knew he had, enters his life.
Previously, the network announced the drama as part of the 2026-27 slate of shows and promised adrenaline-pumping rescues, complicated relationships, and heartwarming moments that were key elements behind the success of the original shows. 'Baywatch' is one of the most anticipated shows right now, and while there's no official release date yet, there's a possibility that it might premiere in early 2027. This will be the latest title from the franchise after the 2017 film of the same name starring an ensemble cast led by Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass, Ilfenesh Hadera, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
For Mitchell, the role comes on the back of her success as Emily Fields in thriller drama, 'Pretty Little Liars,' which ran from 2010 to 2017. Her acting chops saw her earn nominations for six Teen Choice Awards. Her rise continued after she starred in 'You' as Peach Salinger. Her other major roles include Stella Cole in 'Dollface', and she recently served as an EP for the crime drama series, 'The Cleaning Lady'. Fans are now eager to see what she brings to her role in the much-awaited title.
