'Save Me Too': Deadbeat father seeks redemption in this thrilling crime drama about abuse and child trafficking
Returning with a new installment of Season 1 of Lennie James' brainchild 'Save Me', 'Save Me Too' is a six-part dramatic continuation. The crime thriller drama makes its return with a bang as it takes you into the underbelly of London's darkest, messiest gullies bringing you to a junction where human trafficking, abuse and exploitation.
But at the center of it is a gut-wrenching, precious story about a father-daughter relationship - one that James has written and performed to perfection. Playing the role of "a down-and-out, sofa surfing womanizer", James' intention was to first tell a story about redemption - all the other associated social causes attached to the story and the characters came in later.
"With 'Save Me' and 'Save Me Too', we wanted to tell a story about redemption wrapped in a thriller, set in a part of London few thrillers are set in, populated by characters I know but rarely see wholly depicted on TV and led by the most unlikely of heroes," James had said ahead of the show's arrival to US waters on NBCU's streaming site Peacock on November 5, 2020.
In a 2018 interview with MEA WorldWide (MEAWW), James had said, "[Kidnapping and Trafficking] aren't really the themes that drew me to the story. I had a phone call asking me whether or not I had an idea for a television series and this one kind of just popped into my head. It was very much a desire to write a thriller and, as with most of the themes I write, I wanted to pen a story of redemption."
"The other themes of the missing child and exploration of places that Nelly's search for Jody takes him just came in with the storytelling," he continued. "It wasn't so much that I wanted to write about the trafficking and exploitation of children. It was more of wanting to write a thriller and I wanted to set it in a real place with real themes and a realistic lead character with all of his flaws, who goes on a real journey to find things about himself that he didn't know when he started off."
In Season 2 of the Sky Atlantic Original, which is titled 'Save Me Too', Nelly's life takes a darker turn. 17 months since his daughter Jody (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) went missing, Nelly is still hot on her heels. But time will leave its mark on him.
According to the official synopsis, "His quest to find her lives on as he put his relationships and his life, on the line. New potential suspects are revealed and long-buried secrets unearthed as Nelly is torn between protecting Grace, the young woman he found in a caravan park and continuing his mission to find Jody."
If we offer you any further details about the plot a or Nelly, we would be depriving you of quality television. If the upcoming Season 2 is anywhere as good as its predecessor, we wouldn't want you to miss it. Starring Lennie James as Nelly, Suranne Jones as Claire McGory, Stephen Graham as Melon, Jason Flemyng as Tam, Nadine Marshall as Detective Sergeant Shola O'Halloran, Olivia Gray as Grace, Kerry Godliman as Teens and Susan Lynch as Stace, 'Save Me Too' will be available to stream on Peacock on November 5, 2020.
