'sMothered': Brett and Jason question Angelica and Sunhe's tight bond, fans call it 'toxic codependency'
Sunhe and Angelica have always been close but it looks like their partners are not happy with how close they are. Ever since the season started, viewers got to understand their relationship better when they found out that the mother-daughter duo shower together and share everything.
In the latest episode (June 28), their relationship was questioned by their respective partners who thought they might be too involved in each other's lives. Brett and Sunhe have been dating for five years and have been engaged for two years but their relationship seems to have hit a dead end as the two struggle to get on the same page about their relationship. Brett has been asking Sunhe to move to Omaha and start their life there but she has been brushing this suggestion aside to make sure she is there for Angelica if need be. Sunhe also revealed that the two had not been in talking terms for two weeks and this made her question where they stood in their relationship.
As Brett traveled to meet Sunhe, they decided to go on a double date with Angelica and Jason. Angelica opened up about Sunhe's relationship with Brett to Jason and revealed she had been aware of all the problems between them. She pointed out that she had been on call while the two spoke about their problems. Jason felt strange and thought it was overstepping personal boundaries when Angelica decided to be on the call while Sunhe and Brett spoke. He thought it was not nice of her to be on the call without Brett being aware of this. However, Angelica tried to remind him of the type of relationship she and Sunhe share and stated there was nothing strange about it.
As Brett and Sunhe arrived, the dinner did not go as planned. Brett brought up the topic of Sunhe moving to Ohama and Angelica was not too happy to hear this. She thought Brett should move in with her mother rather than the other way around. Brett made it clear that he was not going to leave his children, who were 13 and 16, without a father. While Angelica thought they were old enough to grow up without having him around all the time, Brett questioned her need to have Sunhe around even though she was 32 years old. Jason agreed and thought it was time for both of them to focus on their respective lives.
However, Sunhe was not pleased to hear this and made it clear that she could make his life worse and she wasn't someone he should be messing with. Speaking to the camera, Angelica and Sunhe hinted that they chose their partners and if they are not ready to accept their relationship, it was time for them to head out of the door.
Fans did not appreciate the tight bond the mother-daughter pair share. "Run! And run fast fellas!! Omg, if this isn’t the textbook example of toxic codependency I don’t know what is!" one commented. "There reaches a point that they need to live their own lives. Being close is one thing, not being able to survive without the other one isn’t healthy for either of them," another wrote. While a third echoed similar thoughts and wrote, "This is unhealthy love. People grow... Allow your daughter and your self the opportunity to live love and laugh.... with OTHER people!"
'sMothered' airs on Sundays at 10 pm ET on TLC.
