What is Rule Breaker?

Most of our favorite cookies and brownies are made of flour. Thanks to several allergens that are present in regular cookies and brownies, many people can't enjoy these treats. New York-based entrepreneur Nancy Kalish decided to address this issue head-on.

After several trial and error, she finally came up with the perfect recipe to bake cookies and brownies without any allergens such as nuts, flour, eggs and milk. The main ingredient is chickpea! It may sound weird to make cookies or brownies with chickpea, but you can't tell the difference. They are certified gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO and kosher.

Rule Breaker Snacks are produced in a nut-free bakery, making them a perfect cookie for school lunch boxes, as many schools now have a nut-free rule for food brought into the school.

The website describes the product as, "Rule Breaker Snacks break all the rules (no flour! no eggs! no butter!).  Chickpeas (that's right, beans) are the first ingredient. But our soft-baked treats are so chewy and delicious, you'd never know.  They come in several crave-worthy flavors: Deep Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Chunk Blondie, Birthday Cake, P'Nutter Chocolate Chip (nut-free) and our limited edition Mint Chocolate Brownie Bites."

Who is the founder?

Nancy Kalish is the founder of Rule Breaker Snacks. Prior to setting this up, she was a health journalist and certified health coach. Although she knew all about healthy and clean eating, her love for desserts came in the way. One day, she came across a brownie recipe that used black beans. She decided to give the recipe a shot and it turned out to be disastrous.

On the website, she explained, "I had read about brownies made from black beans on the internet.  And I thought, okay, beans are healthy. So I whipped some up.  Well, those first black bean brownies were awful--they tasted like beans, they even smelled like beans.  But they had that luscious brownie texture.  So I kept at it, tweaking my recipe, switched to chickpeas, and I ate a LOT of brownies. Finally, after a year, I had created the perfect recipe with no beany taste."

In March 2019, Nancy launched her Kickstarter campaign with a goal of $10,000. She met the goal almost immediately, so the goal was stretched to a further $30,000. The campaign eventually ended with $28,402 from 403 backers. In July of 2020, Rule Breaker Snacks was nominated for a Mindful Award and won Brownie Product of the Year, and Overall Snack Product of the Year.

How much does it cost?

Rule Breaker brownie bites, cake bites, and blondie bites retail for $4.99. While a full-sized version of these snacks is sold in boxes of four and 12. A box of four treats costs $14.99, while a box of 12 costs $32.99.
