'Rick and Morty': HBO Max gets streaming rights for Adult Swim's animated sci-fi dark comedy
Adult Swim's dark comedy 'Rick and Morty' is all set to stream on HBO Max. The network made an official announcement on their official Twitter page as part of its media day announcements.
The streaming service that launches in May 2020 is in the same category as Hulu, Disney + and Netflix. New episodes of the show will be available on HBO Max after its premiere on Adult Swim.
The episodes, though, aren't exclusive as Hulu is still the right retainer to stream the show by extending the library by 70 episodes, according to a CBR report.
The upcoming streamer also has a slew of interesting projects in the works, including a Green Lantern series as well as HBO Max's acquisition of South Park.
Other content pieces include 'Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time', a 'Boondocks' remake, and new animated programs featuring Looney Toons and Hanna-Barbera characters.
'Rick and Morty' follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and interdimensional adventures.
Co-creator Justin Roiland voices the eponymous characters, with Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer and Sarah Chalke voicing the rest of the family.
The series originated from an animated short parody film of 'Back to the Future', created by Roiland for Channel 101, a short film festival co-founded by Harmon. The series has been acclaimed by critics for its originality, creativity, and humor.
Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on November 10, 2019, and will consist of 10 episodes.
Talking about the renewal, Dan Harmon, one of the creators told EW about his interest in doing longer seasons: "I would like to think I've learned enough from my mistakes in season three that we could definitely do 14 now."
"But then I have to say, 'Yeah but you're the guy who says we can do 14 who turned out to be wrong so we're not listening to you now'," he added.
