Netflix on Friday released its first African original series, 'Queen Sono', created by Kagiso Lediga and starring South African actress Pearl Thusi, who acted in ABC's 'Quantico' in its second season.

'Queen Sono' revolves around the eponymously named covert operative in a South African spy agency as she tackles every threat from smugglers to corruption within her own government. Queen's mother was a revolutionary during the anti-apartheid struggles in the country and was assassinated 25 years prior to the setting of the film.

The spy thriller opened up to great reviews from fans after its release.

One fan wrote, "The storyline is deep, a bit of South African history and current state of political affairs. Pay attention black child... can you relate? A job well-done @KagisoLediga. @PearlThusi you were exceptional, you damn killed it."

Another tweeted, "just started watching #QueenSono and it’s SO good! Not only is it black as hell but it’s so well done."

Fans praised the show's political offerings, with one tweeting, "Corruption in Africa is like “something out of a movie” and I’m glad to see us finally doing a show with double agents/ black ops and do it so boldly and so beautifully. Can’t wait to see more!" Another wrote, "It's not short of imagination yet grounded. Parallels/ can be cross-referenced with real incidents = blurs lines between fiction & reality. Converts SA politics into a conspiracy theory."

Many fans are also praising the representation within the show. One viewer wrote, "@PearlThusi riding a bike through Joburg and actually recognizing the places she’s passing is so damn great. Super excited for what’s to follow." A fan said, "I’ve started watching #QueenSono, the first African Netflix original series. This is a huge moment for African storytelling because we have so much potential, so much talent, so much vibrancy in Africa."

All episodes of Season 1 of 'Queen Sono' are now streaming on Netflix.
