The Umbrella Academy is based on musician Gerard Way's award-winning graphic novel and the first season of the show heavily revolves around the first issue of his comic book series, The Umbrella Academy: Apocolypse Suite. The Umbrella Academy follows a family of superheroes, who are out to save the world but must settle their own petty squabbles before they can get on to bigger problems. The story begins in 1989 when forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who had shown no signs of pregnancy the same day. With a crazy intro like that, it?s no wonder producers wanted to make this into a live-action series. Most viewers may not be that familiar with these off-beat superheroes, but with fans getting more conscious and a little too familiar with mainstream superheroes, The Umbrella Academy is a good change of pace from the regular moody drab "good vs evil" we're a little too comfortable with.
