MEAWW Corrections and Clarifications Policy

It is MEA WorldWide’s policy to correct all errors in articles, videos and social media posts, and reflect these same corrections in a timely manner.

How to bring an error to then notice of the editors

Reporters and sub-editors should immediately flag corrections to a senior member of the editorial team. These corrections may have been identified by the editorial team, by a reader, or by a person quoted within the article or video. All corrections must have prior approval of a senior editorial member before being implemented.

When a correction is made, it should reflect on the website, on social media, and in any offline repository (such as archives, etc). Any change made within an article should also be noted at the top of the item.

Articles

Clarifications and corrections should be clear and avoid obfuscation. Anyone reading the correction should be able to understand how and why the mistake has been corrected.

Social media

When incorrect or misleading information is published on social media, MEA WorldWide should correct it in a timely manner by publishing a new status or post acknowledging the error.

If it is possible to edit the original post to note the error and correct the information, this is preferred. Once the information has been corrected, the incorrect post may be deleted.

Take-down (“unpublish”) requests

These have become increasingly frequent, and such requests may not always have merit.

As a matter of editorial policy, only those articles that have serious errors and show proof of misleading and/or libellous content, should be considered for “take-down”, and should be done so only after a thorough investigation. It is always preferable to correct an article rather than unpublish it.
