'Pieces of a Woman': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Shia Labeouf and Vanessa Kirby starrer
Shia LaBeouf's latest film which won awards at the Venice Film Festival has had to face negative publicity because of its embattled star
From award-winning director Kornél Mundruczó of 'White God' fame, comes 'Pieces of a Woman'. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the film is a deeply personal, searing and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live along with her loss. After its world premiere on September 4, 2020, at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, lead actress Vanessa Kirby won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress and the Arca CinemaGiovani Award for 'Best International Film' was given to director Mundruczó.
It will be released in select theaters on December 30, 2020, before being released digitally by Netflix on January 7, 2021.
The film follows Martha (Kirby) and Sean (LaBeouf) as they excitedly prepare for the birth of their first child. Tragedy strikes when Martha loses the baby during an at-home birth and pursues litigation against her midwife (Parker) while she tries to repair her relationships with Sean and her domineering mother.
Shia Labeouf plays Sean. Labeouf had early successes as a child actor and a young actor from 2007 onwards with films like 'Disturbia', the 'Transformers' franchise, and 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'. However, scandals in his personal life about increasingly bizarre behavior made him persona non grata for a while.
After trying his hand at performance art and starring in Sia's controversial video 'Elastic Heart', he wrote and acted in a therapy-inspired film about his abusive childhood called 'Honey Boy'. His star status seemed to have been rising again till he was sued by English musician FKA Twigs, whom he dated from 2018 to 2019, for sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress. Since then, his name has been scrubbed from Netflix's 'For Your Consideration' page compiled for award shows.
Vanessa Kirby, an English actress, plays the role of Martha whose home birth goes tragically wrong. For her role as Princess Margaret in the Netflix period drama series 'The Crown', she won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress and earned a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
She gained wider recognition for her roles in action films like 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout' and 'Hobbs & Shaw'. She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in 'Pieces of a Woman'.
Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, the film is based on a screenplay by Kata Wéber.
Martin Scorsese served as the film's executive producer. Scorsese is a globally renowned director known for films like 'Taxi Driver', 'Raging Bull', 'Gangs of New York', 'Shutter Island' and 'The Wolf of Wallstreet'
After a home birth gone wrong, Martha is both devastated and angry. It takes a toll on her relationship with her husband even as she sues the midwife and deals with her overbearing mother.
