'Performance Chorus': SBS announces first choir audition show, JYP joins judging panel
There are a lot of survival shows in the K-pop industry. It is one of the quickest ways of guaranteeing success and a loyal fanbase for the winning artists. Thousands of viewers tune in to watch the show and root for the contestants. They then turn into fans of the winners and continue to support them in their K-pop journey. This is evident from Kep1er of ‘Girls Planet 999’, Enhypen of ‘I-LAND’, and I.O.I and Wanna One from the ‘Produce’ series. And now, SBS has announced a new type of audition survival show – ‘Performance Chorus’.
On March 21, SBS announced its latest audition show. ‘Performance Chorus’ is the first of its kind in South Korea as it is a talent competition for show choirs. We have been getting a lot of firsts since last year. Mnet, previously hosted ‘Street Woman Fighter’, the first survival show for all-female dance crews followed by tvN’s ‘Mom Is An Idol’ which gave a second chance to first-gen idols turned moms to re-debut once again.

SBS teams up with JYP for ‘Performance Chorus’
SBS has also teamed up with long-time collaborator Park Jinyoung aka JYP who is also the founder of his own successful K-pop label, JYP Entertainment. ‘Performance Chorus’ looks to discover new and unique talents and give them challenging missions. It has been reported that the show choir audition program has been in the works since the second half of 2021. SBS hopes to provide a national platform for show choirs to help them get more mainstream.
‘Performance Chorus’ is looking to have talented choirs from across the nation and to form new choirs for individual singers who hope to participate. Expectations are high as SBS is set to provide exciting chorus battles to the general public for the first time. The winners will get to represent South Korea in international show choir competitions along with JYP and other masters. SBS has already begun holding auditions and it will go on till May 2. Choirs with 16 to 28 members can apply.
JYP’s survival shows
This is not the first time that SBS has roped in JYP for a show of theirs. The idol producer was a part of ‘K-pop Star’, the six season survival show that ended up generating winners and runner-ups like JAMIE, Lee Hi, AKMU, Sam Kim and P1Harmony’s Jong-seob. SBS also created the ambitious show ‘LOUD’ where both PSY and JYP judged the contestants and ended up picking winners for their upcoming boy groups. JYP has also previously held survival shows that went on to form TWICE, Stray Kids and NiziU.
