'Outer Range' Season 2 Review: Josh Brolin's mind-bending time travel show on Prime Video leaves you wanting more
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Outer Range' Season 2 is streaming on Prime Video from May 16, 2024, and it continues the story of the Abbott Family Ranch that has a hole in its land. The hole, in the first season, is established as a gateway to time travel.
Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), the patriarch of the Abbott family is protective about this hole as he knows the secret behind it. He has to be particularly careful of Autumn Rivers (Imogen Poots) who is specifically out there to investigate the hole. By the end of the first season, we already know that Autumn is Royal's granddaughter Amy from the future.
The second season emphasizes the science behind time travel and the hole. It further explores the secrets of the Abbott family and their relationships with neighbors Tillerson. Here is our detailed review of 'Outer Range'.
Uncompromised writing and great conceptualization make 'Outer Range' Season 2 an intriguing watch
The writing of the show is bold and unapologetic. The writers pick up a complicated theme and never attempt to simplify it. The storytelling is non-linear and it works extremely well for this series as it keeps the viewers on its toes and trying hard to keep up with the narrative.
The writers have built character arcs that go deeper than just the plot and bring out a psychological element to the complex concepts of space and time. The character arcs of Royal Abbott and Autumn Rivers intersect through multiple dimensions as they try to keep secrets that time will expose.
Further, the exposition bits are woven into the plot and never make the plot boring. Parallel storytelling also helps establish character in a long-format story. Creator Brian Watkins makes a conscious decision to go into the depths of the scientific concepts of time travel in this season and that significantly enhances the writing of the series.
Production design and cinematography make the series a visual delight
The makers have invested heavily in the pre-production of the series and the choice of locations seems perfect for the series. Wide open spaces shot beautifully using wide frames are a delight to watch in this series. They make Wyoming and its abandoned wilderness a character for the series.
The editing and pacing of the second season are much faster than the first season and keep the viewers hooked in every single frame. The series has seven episodes and it is the perfect length for this series where the makers have spent a substantial amount of time establishing its concepts and characters in the first season.
Josh Brolin is subtle and nuanced as Royal Abbott
Josh Brolin is the backbone of this show and his subtle performance is characterized by an exasperated expression that he wears throughout the series. He is a man hiding secrets of the past, fighting battles in the present, and discovering the mysteries of the future.
Imogen Poots yet again proves herself to be a powerhouse of talent. She holds her own against some seasoned professionals and does so with grace and panache.
