'NCIS' Season 18 Premiere: Why did Fornell ask Gibbs for 2 weeks? Fans believe 'something is about to get ugly'

'This isn’t looking good for Fornell. And I’m still confused about opening scene where Gibbs sniper shot McGee!!! Guess this is an ongoing story arc that will continue through the season,' a fan said

Spoilers for Season 18 Episode 1

The brand new Season 18 of 'NCIS' kicked off with a rather unusual start. All the way in the the year 2020 on the show's timeline, we see Jethro Gibbs shooting his own team member Tim McGee not once, but twice from a sniper - once in the arm, another time in the leg. After that the show takes us back to 2019, where none other than Tobias Fornell has decided to show up in Gibbs life once again, this time with leads on an "errand boy" called Josh who could be their link to the "head of the snake" of the opioid crisis that has plagued Fornell's daughter Emily for years. At the end of the episode, however, Josh was found dead, but Fornell's action leaves us extremely perplexed.

Right after the commotion of the epsiode ends and we are transported back to Gibbs' tryst with his long timey friend, the failed attempt at digging out the head of the opioid ring takes them to find Josh's dead body. Yet Fornell exhibits no shock, no suprise at seeing the young man dead. Instead, he reaches into the dead body's pocket and takes out a key instead. Fornell has already called the cops to the crime scene as Josh's dead body was found slumped in a car. But the man doesn't wait for the cops to get there. Instead, he takes out a key from Josh's pocket, and tells Gibbs to “check back with me in two weeks”, insisting: “Everything will make sense. Trust me.”

Reassuring as he might have meant to be, this couldn't have sounded more ominous going by Fornell standards. Or so think fans, as they flocked to Twitter to express their speculations on the cliffhanger this episode ended with. "Fornell is about to go on the run. He told Gibbs to wait to hear from him in two weeks. Something is about to get ugly," tweeted a fan, raising more than just eyebrows at the prospect of this f*ck up. Could it be possible that Fornell himself killed Josh and staged his body? What other reason could there be for the absolute nonchalance he exhibits upon seeing him?

"I give it one week and Fornell will be in over his head and Gibbs to save him," quipped another fan on Twitter. It's quite likely, Fornell has plenty of motive to kill anybody associated with the opioid ring boss. "Uh oh this isn’t looking good for Fornell. And I’m still confused about the opening scene where Gibbs sniper shot McGee!!! Guess this is an ongoing story arc that will continue through the season," noted another fan.

A third fan also speculated what's to come, noting: "They will have gotten close to head of the snake but he's threatening to kill someone or the person on the plane is or has Fornell. Gibbs probably had to shoot McGee to stop him....or its a misdirect: Gibbs is NCIS sniper but McGee was shot by someone else." But there's also a chance that Fornell wants ot go on his own isolated investigation as the matter is of more personal, vested interest to him than anybody else on team. Or so thinks this fan, who shared: "I think Fornell is looking for trouble, big time. That, and he probably wants to learn more about that medalion he swiped from the dead perp."

Here's hoping Gibbs doesn't die. That's all.

'NCIS' Season 18 airs on Tuesdays at 8 pm only on CBS.
