'New Amsterdam' Season 2: Max's cancer, the new baby and the loss of a loved one may put his career as the Medical Director at risk

Max's character is based on the real-life personality — Dr. Eric Manheimer, who transformed the entire health care system as the Medical Director of Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital for 15 years.

Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) is easily the fan-favorite as the Medical Director on 'New Amsterdam'. He is well-known for being a patient-friendly doctor and his commitment to work is evident from the fact that although his wife is carrying their first child, he barely spends any time with her.

Max's character is based on the real-life personality — Dr. Eric Manheimer, who transformed the entire health care system as the Medical Director of Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital for 15 years.

In season one, while Max is dealing with the pressure of his responsibility to make the hospital the best in town, he finds out that he has throat cancer. Along with the mounting pressure of work, Max's treatment begins and he also has to deal with his wife nearing her due date.

As the season progresses, his health begins to deteriorate and he struggles to keep a check on everything in the hospital. In the offset, his closest friend and oncologist Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) helps him deal with his cancer and starts chemotherapy on him.

However, the treatment fails and Max is left with no choice but to appoint someone in his place until he feels better. He eventually decides to make Dr. Sharpe the deputy director in his absence.

During the last episode of season one, it was also confirmed that a new treatment by another oncologist was seemingly working for Max. That seemed to offer a positive outcome in the season's finale episode as a sign that he was getting better. Unfortunately, things didn't end very well as another tragic accident in the final episode left us on a cliffhanger.

There is a chance that Max's future in New Amsterdam Public Hospital would go through a painful turn of events. Season two will also reveal who died in the accident. If it is, in fact, his wife who meets her end, then Max is set to go through a really tough time with taking care of his health, the baby and the hospital.

In the final accident scene, Dr. Helen is also nowhere in sight. If the oncologist is the one who has died, her death will have some serious repercussions for Max and the hospital.

Either way, this could be the end of one of the most important women in his life. Max may have to either beat the odds or resign if he cannot deal with the loss of his wife or his best friend. On top of that, he has to think of his newborn baby girl Luna.

Max's character is definitely set to take a whole new direction in the upcoming season. Catch season two of 'New Amsterdam' on September 24, 2019, on NBC.
