'The Mandalorian' Episode 5: Who is the mysterious figure teased at the end of 'The Gunslinger'?

Very little is seen of the figure, but 'The Mandalorian' has given enough clues to lend weight to a little speculation

Spoiler alert for episode 5 of ‘The Mandalorian’

This week’s episode of ‘The Mandalorian’ was even more self-contained than the first four episodes have been, but fear not. The episode featured one final scene that teased a greater mystery for the three remaining episodes to uncover - a mysterious figure walks over to the body of Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), kneeling over it, before the screen cuts to black and the credits roll. It’s a scene that’s only a few seconds long, but ‘The Mandalorian’ has given us just enough clues for us to make some guesses as to who the figure is.

Less is more, and the bare hint that’s given of this mysterious figure suggests that they’re not just a tease for the next episode, but will have greater significance leading up to the season finale. Consider the synopsis for the season’s final episode - “The Mandalorian comes face to face with an unexpected enemy.” Given the strange importance given to this unseen figure, it seems safe to assume that they’re the unexpected enemy mentioned.

The first, and most obvious guess is that it’s a member of the Bounty Hunter’s Guild. As the recaps for the show keep reminding us, every bounty hunter in the guild has a tracker on the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and the child that he’s escaped with. This guess seems unlikely, for two reasons - one, hardly an unexpected enemy when the Mandalorian knows he’s being hunted down. Two, the bounty hunters have no reason to go to Fennec Shand’s body when they can track the Mandalorian’s whereabouts directly.

The figure might not be a member of the bounty hunter’s guild, but they could still very well be hired help. The remains of the Empire paid good money in procuring the child, and now that the Guild has let the Client (Werner Herzog) down, he might have hired an outside agent to regain “the asset” from the Mandalorian, dead or alive.

A closer look at the figure reveals that they’re wearing some sort of cloak, or cape, as well as armour. While cloaks aren’t uncommon in the galaxy, the most distinctive design that incorporates a cape with armour is that of the Mandalorians. We don’t know where the Mandalorians went after the battle on Nevarro, and it’s possible that one is hunting Mando down - either for his beskar steel, or out of revenge for being responsible for outing the hidden Mandalorian tribe. Who better to hunt a Mandalorian down than another Mandalorian?

The last important clue is the distinctive clink in every step the figure takes. The clink doubles down the episode’s Western vibe, but while that sound tends to represent the sound of spurs on cowboy boots, no spurs are seen on the figure’s boots at all. Something metal in those boots is causing that clink, and who else in the series have we met with metal feet? That’s right, the series “unexpected enemy” might just be the IG-11 droid (Taika Waititi) back from episode 1, seeking both the target and revenge on the Mandalorian for shooting it in cold blood.

Whatever the case, the figure is likely to be someone very dangerous - at least for Mando. As we’ve seen, the Mandalorian is good at a lot of things, but is far worse at making friends than he is at making enemies.

The next episode of ‘The Mandalorian’ airs December 13, on Disney +.
