The excitement amongst the fans is hitting the roof as MTV VMAs’ award ceremony is coming closer. The coveted award show is all set to roll the red carpet on Sunday, September 12. The list of performances is already doing the rounds on the Internet. With a few new additions, there is also a change in the line-up as Lorde will no longer be performing at the show.

The official Twitter account of MTV VMAs dropped the bomb over the weekend leaving her fans disappointed. Lorde released her third studio album in August 2021 and she was expected to enthrall her fans with new songs from her latest studio effort. The first round of line-up was announced on August 18 that also included Lorde and other artistes namely Camila Cabello, Lil Nas X, Machine Gun Kelly, and Olivia Rodrigo.

Why is Lorde not performing at MTV VMAs 2021?

Taking to Twitter, MTV VMAs posted, “Due to a change in production elements, Lorde can no longer perform at this year’s show. We love Lorde and cannot wait for her to perform on the VMA stage in the future!” followed by an emoticon of a yellow heart.  The makers of the show did not elaborate what exactly they meant by “change in production elements” which pissed Lorde’s fans.. However, they used this opportunity to ask the producers of the award ceremony to rope in Normani as a replacement.

The singer-songwriter had recently revealed that she has not been approached by MTV VMAs so far. The former Fifth Harmony member confessed on Twitter that she has not been booked by MTV VMAs after Cardi B posted on her own Twitter wall saying she really wish Lizzo and Normani were performing at this year’s award ceremony. The former ‘X-Factor’ contestant also took indirect shots at the award show with multiple tweets. Hashtags like “letnormaniperform” and “booknormani” earlier trended on Twitter. Speaking of Lorde, this is not the first time she courted controversy. In 2017, the New Zealand crooner appeared on the VMAs stage to perform on her hit single ‘Homemade Dynamite’ However, instead of performing, she did an interpretive dance onstage as the track played in the background. She had raised quite a few eyebrows at the time.

MTV VMAs will be hosted by Doja Cat from Barclays Center, New York City. Foo Fighters will be honored with Global Icon Award whereas, Justin Bieber, who had a stellar run on the charts in 2021, is leading the pack of nominations with seven nods. Following closely is Megan Thee Stallion with six nods whereas, teen sensation Billie Eilish managed to score five nominations. To celebrate the 40th edition of MTV VMAs, the Moon Person trophy has been redesigned by Kehinde Wiley.

‘Industry sh***ing on Lorde for no reason’

Social media users were quick to dismiss MTV VMAs for canceling Lorde’s performance but a majority of them asked the makers to call Normani as a replacement. “So sad…anyways REPLACE WITH NORMANI”, said one user as another posted, “I’m sure madison beer will be glad to replace her.” The next one added, “Please, elaborate in the "change in production elements" part. That's like super vague.”

Whereas, one user tweeted, “Industry sh***ing on lorde for no reason once more, they’re just f**king with her.” One person said, “I love Lorde was looking forward to hearing her live again. It’s not too late to give that slot to Tinashe or Normani.” Another stated, “Give normani the spot.” Speaking on similar lines, one disappointed user said, “That's bad. call normani she'll put on a good show!” And, another concluded, “Call it what it is. The album was a huge let down and y’all canceled.”
