'Mountain Men': Josh Kirk skins dead bison after chasing away fox that killed it and ate chunk of its meat
'Mountain Men' aired its second episode this week and it's nothing short of fascinating. Once again, the men on the show proved that however risky, living in the wilderness is something they can pull off as if it were a walk in the park. Surviving sub-zero temperatures can prove to be quite the challenge: a shortage of food, and, of course, rescuing their families when wild animals come looking for their food.
On most days, they are prepared to face any adversity but it was not Josh Kirk's day this week. He was hoping to hunt a bison and was out in the cold looking for it. But by the time he arrived at the spot, he saw a fox had already killed it and eaten a chunk of its meat. After chasing away the fox, Josh sat down to skin the bison -- a pound of its flesh is approximately $10, at times even more, which meant if he could move quickly on skinning the animal, he'll have thousands of dollars worth of meat at his disposal.
While that looks like a tempting idea, Josh struggled while skinning the thick skin and by the time he was done, he had lost daylight. He couldn't go back home and had to set up camp by the carcass, protecting it from wild animals. Although he is not short of gear or hunting ammo, it's quite the risk to take just for meat and money. But maybe he's used to living out his days in such fear-loaded situations.
Whatever the case may be, Josh seems more than prepared at every step. And that is what makes him such a fit on the show. However, fans have earlier refused to believe that this mountain man is no special compared to the seasoned Tom Oar. The comparisons cannot be avoided but that doesn't have to mean Josh doesn't bring anything new to the table. Previously, he hunted down a mature buck, seasoned its meat with salt and cayenne pepper, and left it to cure in the smokehouse. He too knows his ways around surviving the wild and knows how to bring home food and money.
