'The Morning Show' was one of the first Apple TV+ shows that premiered on the streaming service, which debuted in 2019. The show broadcast an impressive cast, compelling plot and turned out to be one of the streaming service's best shows.

Release date

The release date of the upcoming season is yet to be announced. However, do watch this space for more updates about the same. The director of the show, Mimi Leder, confirmed to Indie Wire that the filming of the second season will begin in February 2020.

Plot

The show was renewed for a second season on November 7, according to a report in Variety.

Speaking about the same to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Kerry Ehrin said about the plot for the upcoming season, "I would say Season 2 is a lot about the transition. And still, at the same time, a lot of the same shit goes on! You set new rules, but then it falls back. This is true in the real world. Where it becomes: are we paying lip service to women’s rights? So it’s really just examining the transition period more but with the same themes of 'What is real'? And people having this desire to have control over their own lives, which they perceive as being through power."

Speaking of how Alex and Bradley's relationship will evolve, she said, "The interesting thing about Alex and Bradley is that they still barely know each other. They’ve known each other for like, three months of working together. If you work with someone for three months, you don’t know them super well. They’ve gone through two really traumatic experiences together, which has sort of forged their souls in a way. But they still don’t really know each other as people, so we’re playing some of that in the next season."

She also confirmed that Billy Crudup will play a big part in the second season. However, talks are still on to get Steve Carrell back for Season 2. She said, "We would like him to be back in Season 2. It’s in the works, but it’s not a done deal yet. That’s all I can say. But I would very much like him to be and I think that continuing that story is actually important."

Actor Jennifer Aniston plays the role of a popular morning show host, Alex Levy, whose life takes an unexpected turn when her co-host Mitch Kessler is fired from his job after being accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. In the heat of things, she announces to the world that Bradley, a reporter from a local station, would be her co-host and from there she does everything in her power to ensure that she is not written out of the narrative.

Reese Witherspoon as Bradley Jackson

Actor Reese Witherspoon plays the role of Bradley Jackson, who becomes popular overnight after a video of her yelling at a protester for not knowing what he was protesting. She is then flown to New York to be a guest on Alex's show where she catches the eye of Cory Ellison, the chief of news at the network, and ends up getting a job offer. Just when she considers being a correspondent for the show, she learns that she will be the host and is shocked. By the end of Season 1, she goes through highs and lows of being a host of a popular news show.

Steve Carrell as Mitch Kessler

Actor Steve Carrell plays the role of Mitch Kessler, who is accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women who worked with him in the past. He is fired from his post as a result and is left to face all the allegations by himself. Towards the end, after being betrayed by his network's chief, Fred, he decides to out everyone on the show who was complicit in his behavior, especially Fred. In the process, one of his affairs with a booker of the show surfaces and at the end of the season, Mitch understands how much he had affected her after he hears about her death from the producer of his former show.

Mark Duplass as Chip Black

Mark Duplass' character of Chip Black is a spineless producer of Alex Levy and Mitch Kessler's show. He is very much complicit in everything that Kessler did and stood by as it all happened. However, he is not ready to take responsibility for his actions until he is pressed for options. If he didn't blow the whistle on Kessler's firing to the New York Times, chances of him being fired were quite high. So he did everything possible to keep his position, including pushing Bradley to do an interview of Kessler behind Alex's back.

Billy Crudup as Cory Ellison

Billy Crudup's Cory Ellison is one of the most fascinating characters on the show. He is the newly appointed director of the news team who is brought on board to clean up the mess after Kessler has been fired. It was his decision to hire Bradley Jackson, but even he was surprised to see Levy announce that she was the new co-host. He supports Bradley through the tough phase of adapting to her new surroundings and also seems like he would be a good friend of hers. He also helps Chip in organizing the Kessler interview to out Fred and possibly remove him from the position of the network director.
