SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Mnet's 'Street Man Fighter' premiered on August 23, and from the first episode itself, the dance show is being criticized for promoting toxic masculinity. The plague of controversies around the Mnet show started with host Kang Daniel claiming that he was more comfortable working with male dancers on 'SMF' than the female dance crews on 'Street Woman Fighter' from 2021. Fans called the singer sexist for his remarks, after which the show's Producer CP Kwon made another sexist remark belittling the female dancers in the first season of the show.

The producer said that 'SWF' (Street Woman Fighter) showed jealousy and betrayal whereas the male version of the Mnet dance survival show 'Street Man Fighter' shows loyalty and pride. This comment was taken rather sourly by fans who accused the makers of the show of promoting toxic masculinity. Now, fans are highlighting how the dance crews on the show - especially YGX - are homophobic and misogynistic towards other dancers, like members of the dance crew Eoddae.

'SMF' dance crews criticized for homophobia

The show premiered with amazing ratings but fans started pointing out how members of other 'Street Man Fighter' dance crews had made homophobic comments against Kinky - a dancer from the other dance crew Eoddae, that is also participating in the Mnet show. A clip from the episode shared by fans shows the reactions from other dance crew members on 'SMF' as they watched Kinky perform.

Fans pointed out that the dancers made comments such as, "It’s a bit disgusting," and "I won’t say anything because if I do, I'll curse," as well as "This is a bit uncomfortable I can’t watch.” Viewers shared how the male version of the show was extremely toxic as one fan said, "I hope Eoddae becomes the most successful and popular crew The toxic masculinity of most crews was really disappointing. Fans lash out at YGX for their misogynistic dance

Meanwhile, other fans released a now-deleted TikTok video featuring the members of YGX that danced on a cover of NewJean's new single, 'Hype Boy'. Fans allege that a member of Eoddae is the official choreographer for NewJeans and YGX's cover for the song was extremely exaggerated as the members danced only with the intent to mock the members of NewJeans. Some fans are calling the show misogynistic for all these reasons and demanding the show be canceled altogether. One fan said, "YG is the most well-rounded company. they've truly got it all: criminals, pedophiles, racists, sexists, homophobes... continue to support them and give them your money."

Another fan said, "In this video is a member of EODDAE crew who choreographed New Jeans’ song, they’ve been made fun n gotten homophobic remarks in street man fighter for being “too feminine”, when in reality they’re the most versatile n talented dancers of the show." Someone noted, "They are so ugly to begin with + homophobic men you will never win street man fighter."
