With the rising number of male K-pop idols making sexist remarks, fans are slowly becoming disillusioned with the perfect image they had created of their favorites. Fans in touch with reality have also often pointed out how South Korea has a long way to go when it comes to women’s rights from male Knetizens comparing feminism to misandry to the new Presidential-elect winning the election with anti-feminist campaigns. And now Kang Daniel has come under fire for allegedly making sexist remarks about his co-stars of SWF.

On July 19, male idol Kang Daniel came online to chat with fans. But some of his messages seemed to have annoyed the internet. Following his acting debut in the Disney show ‘Rookie Cops’, when asked about his future acting projects, the soloist shared that he was not interested in full-length K-dramas as he could do better things in his time but he would be open to a mini-series. Fans felt that he was being too proud. But his next messages about hosting SWF (‘Street Woman Fighter’) and how he was uncomfortable around the female participants have fans calling him sexist.

Kang Daniel compares ‘Street Man Fighter’ and ‘Street Woman Fighter’

Kang Daniel was first roped in to be the MC for the all-female dance survival show ‘Street Woman Fighter’. He had gone viral for hyping up the women and looking genuinely excited during the missions. He also hosted the sequels ‘Street Dance Girls Fighter’ and the upcoming male version ‘Street Man Fighter’ (SMF). Well, in his latest chat with fans, Kang Daniel compared SWF and SMF and how he was more comfortable hosting the latter since “they were all men.” He said, “My energy doesn’t get sucked out of me. I was very scared in the beginning. But ‘Street Woman Fighter’ was scarier and I like [SMF] now more.”

The Korean phrase he had used to explain that his energy used to get sucked out during SWF is often linked to women negatively as it hints that women are a handful while men are more easy-going. When fans tried to point out the problematic subtext, the male idol blocked them by saying, “What do you mean I’m being sexist?...Blocking them beep boop. Wheee goodbye. Such people would be the ones who get angry when they attend stand-up comedy shows. Just live comfortably. Life is already too hard.”

Some of his words were mistranslated like when he shared that the SWF participants wore fierce makeup and eyeliner. Kang Daniel’s fans clarified that he was explaining the different guns he had used on ‘Rookie Cops’ and how a revolver was like the base makeup and a rifle was like the eyeliner. The soloist also later clarified his SMF comment saying that he was more comfortable with the male participants since he knew most of them from his street dancing days.

‘Sometimes it’s better not to talk’

One user suggested how idols could reduce such miscommunication, “This is why celebs shouldnt treat fans as friends lol public would interpret things however they want to.” Those who watched the show, explained his words, “He said exactly what SWF dancers said in ep 1, about the possibility of him being scared/uncomfortable due to the mood of the 1st episode.”

Another fan added, “So he compared that this gun (Revolver) is like,  when you wearing make up, it’s like based..And rifle is like eyeliner So basically, He was just comparing with thing danity can related with. He’s just being cute and don’t deserve this whole thing.” One did not find any problem with his words, “Stop taking your hatred on mankind on daniel. He has never said or did anything disrespectful to women.  So what if he's more comfortable around dudes? Also if you know swf you know what he means by 'intimidating'.”

One Knetizen observed, “He's allowed to have tongue slips or whatever, but he shouldn't be whining about blocking the fans because they're pointing this out.” Another noticed, “Did he really let us know that even his fans tried to stop him.” One joked, “Sometimes it’s better not to talk and be mysterious, it may save your career actually.”

Another said, “The problem is the phrase "energy-sucking" he used is often said in a derogatory way towards women (that they are cattier than men) and when his own fans (who speak Korean unlike you) pointed that out, instead of apologizing or saying he didn't mean it in a negative way, he doubled down and blocked people criticizing him. But of course all the oppalogists will insist it's out of context when even he himself said it wasn't.”

One user was blunt, “Weak dude intimidated by strong women. got it.” Another user added, “All he had to say was he like SMF better. Saying his energy was sucked out of him during SWF wasn’t necessary.”
