'Metal Lords' Ending Explained: Did Kevin, Hunter and Emily win Battle of the Bands?
A few months back, if someone would have told me that DB Weiss, who co-created HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, was penning a teen comedy revolving around metal music, I wouldn’t have ever taken it seriously. But here we are and his latest movie, ‘Metal Lords’, has already opened to a bumper response on Netflix.
The movie revolves around a band of misfits trying to show their school that they are more than just nerds. Kevin (Jaeden Martell) plays in the marching band and is insecure about his talents. Meanwhile, his best friend, Hunter (Adrian Greensmith), wants Kevin to be the drummer in his band named ‘Skullfucker’ because he believes that his best friend is destined to be a legend. They enter the Battle of the Bands competition to achieve greatness but soon realize that they need a bass player to complete the group.

Emily (Isis Hainsworth) is a cello player who doesn’t know anything about metal. But when Kevin sees her playing the cello, he knew that she would be the perfect choice for the band and she could learn all the tunes in a matter of days. Will Hunter accept Emily as a member of the group? Or he’ll torment her so much that she would not even think of joining it? Let’s take a look at the movie ends.
‘Metal Lords’ Ending Explained
While visiting a party, Hunter and Kevin make fun of the musicians there about how they can’t even get a note right. Kevin drinks too much and talks to a gorgeous-looking girl named Kendall (Analesa Fisher). He just stares at her and when Kendall asks why is he staring at her? Kevin says that she is beautiful and why wouldn’t anyone stare at her? Kendall says that she could give millions of reasons. She tells him about why boys don’t like to look at her and how insecure she feels.
On the other hand, Hunter is being bullied by some of the school children. They just push him to the ground and the entire musical system falls off. Clay (Noah Urrea) gives Hunter his hand, but Hunter refuses and says that his band needs to do better. That’s when he gets to know that the Battle of the Bands is happening and enters the competition.
Kevin and Hunter start their journey of becoming a group. Hunter gives him a list of metal songs that he needs to listen to and should try performing them on drums. While practicing in the school, he hears someone playing cello and it’s Emily. He asks her if she likes post-death doom metal, but she doesn’t know what that is. He hands her the polyrhythms for “Machinery of Torment” and she kills it on her cello. He believes Emily would be perfect for the band and they both develop an interesting bond with each other.
A few days after Kevin gives Emily the list of songs that she should listen to get a hold of the genre. Meanwhile, Kevin gets engrossed in his practice. One day, Emily gathers the courage of visiting Kevin during the practice and they both play a rendition of ‘War Pigs’ on their respective instruments. But Hunter does not want Emily to be a part of the group because you need to be something special to be a part of a metal band and says “Yokos” are not allowed in the group.
Hunter torments her during the class and tells her how she doesn’t belong here. After listening to him for a few minutes, Emily loses her cool and starts throwing things at him, even breaking her guitar. At this time, you will definitely hate Hunter and applaud Emily for standing up to him. Kevin gets to know about what happened and confronts Hunter about it. He leaves the band and says that he can have a life outside of this band as well.
Kevin and Emily share an intimate moment where Emily tells him that she doesn’t want to scream at people and give such reactions. That’s why she takes her medications. Kevin tells her that there is nothing wrong with her and she is perfect. They share a kiss and Emily tells him that she doesn’t need the pills because Kevin is her “happy pill”.
Elsewhere, Kevin gets an invite from Clay (Noah) to play for his band in one of the ceremonies. The drummer accepts the opportunity and plays there. After the gig, he meets Kendall and they talk to each other. One thing leads to another and Kendall starts kissing Kevin. Although Kevin seemed to be enjoying that moment, in his imagination, he knows that this is wrong. In his mind, metal legends such as Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Kirk Hammet of Metallica, Scott Ian from Anthrax, and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine appear and tell him how much Emily loves him. He breaks the kiss and tells Kendall that he loves Emily.
Elsewhere, Hunter tried to enter the ceremony by wearing a costume and painting his face. However, he is stopped by security and taken to the police. His dad bails him out and has had enough of his antics. He sends Hunter to a wellness center. Hunter is waiting for the doctor to arrive and he is shocked to learn that he is talking to Troy Nix (Joe Manganiello), guitarist and vocalist of the band Kiloton that won the Battle of the Bands competition in 1996. Nix tells him that he got addicted to alcohol and almost lost everything. So, the wellness center saved him and he became a doctor.
After getting to know his symptoms, Nix said that Hunter is absolutely right and he can’t keep him here just because he likes metal music. However, he can’t let him go before Monday because the committee would have to review his recommendation. Hunter says that he needs to go because the Battle of the Band competition is on Friday, but Nix apologizes to him.
Kevin asks Emily if he would accompany him to get Hunter out of that place. She says no, even though she wants Kevin to go for his best friend. He finally gets Hunter out and they meet Nix in the parking lot where he gives him a plectrum that he used during his musical days. The duo meets Emily and Hunter apologizes to her, asking her to join the group. Emily refuses because of her insecurities.
In the end, Emily arrives at the event wearing a dress that would suit the band’s personality. They start playing “Machinery of Torment” and everyone gets a hang of it. The audience is enjoying and chaos ensues when everyone starts pushing each other while enjoying the performance. However, Hunter gets injured when some of the equipment falls on him.
The movie ends with Hunter, Emily, and Kevin getting famous in school and securing a silver medal at the Battle of the Bands.
