'Merry Happy Whatever' Season 1 Episode 8: Don may be a control freak, but he is trying hard to be an adorable father

Don Quinn may be someone who likes to take charge of the lives of his loved ones, but he also understands that every relationship needs space to blossom.

Don Quinn (Dennis Quaid) is a changed man or is he? The closing episode of 'Merry Happy Whatever' Season 1 taps into the inside world of Don. He is alone and misses his late-wife, and is trying hard to keep up with his kids and their problems. It's tough for a single dad like Don, who thinks the only way to keep loved ones close is by controlling their every move and be in charge of their lives.

Sadly, this approach doesn't work well for him and upon realizing, he flies to Los Angeles to make amends with Matt (Brent Morin), on whom he has been harsh and disapproving. He sort-of apologizes and requests he and Emmy (Bridgit Mendler) get back together, to which Matt says he cannot plan others' lives to his liking adding that he has to give them their space.

Don is making an effort but is unable to go all the way through. However, his reaction to Kayla's (Ashley Tisdale) coming out was wonderful and extremely heart-touching. One could see he was having trouble accepting that his now-separated daughter was in an empty marriage, fighting her true feelings because she was afraid if he would not understand her life.

Matt's return to Emmy and the subsequent proposal was straight out of a Hollywood romantic-comedy but it was worth it. To finally see everyone happy, enjoying their space and having made peace with their inner demons was total mush and so needed, given the stressful holiday season they've had.

With Don kissing Nancy (Garcelle Beauvais) and making it official, Sean (Hayes MacArthur) kick-starting his food truck business, Kayla embracing her true identity, Emmy and Matt taking a call on their relationship and deciding to move to London, the writers of 'Merry Happy Whatever' have tied up loose ends quite well and we are happy!

Catch the premiere of 'Merry Happy Whatever' on November 28 only on Netflix.
