'Dollface' cast says unbreakable bond of female friendships highlight of upcoming drama series on Hulu
Curious about what to expect from Kat Dennings' triumphant return to television with the new show 'Dollface'? Well, MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) host Alana Jordon caught up with the cast and crew of the upcoming show, premiering on Hulu in November, at the Paley Fest.
Kat, who plays Jules, the show's lead, said that she has been in a similar situation, emotionally, which made the part "interesting" for her. "She is so in love with her boyfriend of five years and he breaks up with her out of nowhere. It destroys her. She has to find her friends again who she has left by the wayside."
The show's first season will show her trying to reconnect with her friends, especially her college roommate Madison Maxwell. Brenda Song, who will portray Madison, described her character as "Jules' best friend," who has "her walls up very very high" when Jules tries to ingratiate herself back into her old circle of gal pals. "She is the most hurt," explains Brenda, when Jules disappears from their lives because of her boyfriend.
But audiences will see her walls come down slowly over the course of the first season. "The arc of the girls' friendship really defines this show," she said, describing Madison as the polar opposite of her character on 'The Suite Life of Zack & Cody'. "She takes everything very seriously and isn't someone who jokes around. She packs the lunches and plans the trips. That's her."
Esther Povitsky, a recognizable face on the stand-up comedy circuit, says that her character Izzy is quite similar to Maya, the character she played on 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'. "They are both losers desperate to be accepted and they are both half-Jewish and half-regular," Esther snarks. Asked about the strong female-friendships depicted on the show, Esther says she really lucked out by getting cast in a show full of outstanding women. Since they all had a lot more experience in the business than she did, she felt her co-stars were like her "big sisters".
MEAWW host Alana Jordon also spoke to the creator of the show, Jordan Weiss (Harley Quinn). Jordon emphasized how important it was to explore platonic female friendship in a world where women feel like they are unfulfilled if they didn't have 'The Notebook' type romance unfolding in their lives. As she puts it, "Maybe the greatest love story in your life is with your best friend and that is ok."
Weiss speaks from personal experience, saying that the show was "definitely autobiographical". "I think I have been a Jules, I have been a Madison," she reveals, saying that she could have used her college years to explore her female friendships more. But it was only after a break up that she put in more "conscious effort" to reconnect with her girlfriends. Watch this space for more updates on the show.
