'Terrible choice': Mark Wahlberg slammed for presenting SAG Award to 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' despite past hate crimes

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The SAG Awards 2023 honored actors that truly shined as several stars went home with trophies for their exemplary acting skills. However, the event had its low points as well. One of them being Mark Wahlberg presenting an award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture to 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'. Wahlberg, who is known to have committed hate crimes in the past, was heavy criticized for presenting an award to an almost all-Asian cast.

The 2022 phenomenon, 'Everything Everywhere All at Once', stars Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Wang, Stephanie Hsu as Joy Wang, Jamie Lee Curtis as Deirdre Beaubeirdre, Ke Huy Quan as Waymond Wang, James Hong as Gong Gong and Tallie Medel as Becky Sregor. The A24 marvel bagged four awards and is nominated for 11 Oscars this year.

What crimes did Mark Wahlberg commit?

Wahlberg has been the subject of multiple hate crimes in his younger days. In 1986, Wahlberg was charged with throwing rocks and shouting racial slurs at a group of Black children. A civil rights injunction was issued against him and two of his friends, who were involved in the incident. In 1988, the actor attacked two Vietnamese men and used racist slurs against them, while high on PCP. He was sentenced to two years in prison for the incident. However, the actor only served 45 days. These crimes resurfaced after he shared a post supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. These crimes came to the fore when the actor presented the said award.

'What were they thinking?'

Netizens were furious after what had happened. A person tweeted, "Of all people the producers selected Mark Wahlberg. What were they thinking? Terrible choice #EEAAO #SAGAwards2023." Another person wrote, "The nerve to have the #SAGAwards to have Mark Walburg to give the award to cast of Everything, Everywhere All At Once. What is wrong with you? Why him? He hasn't won an award in his life. #SAGAwards2023 #EEAAO."

Another angry person wrote, "I gotta say, having Mark Wahlberg, who literally went to jail as a teen for committing a hate crime against a Vietnamese man, present an award to the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once was certainly a choice." A second chimed in, "Mark Wahlberg shouldn't be presenting any acting awards seeing as how he hasn't done any acting in 5 years." A third noted, "He was the presenter? Why?" A fourth added in a similar vein, "What has Wahlberg done to make amends?" An irate netizen tweeted, "His enthusiasm when he read EEAAO was so dead, like why even go if you have no interest in the award."

'Everything Everywhere All At Once' creates a record

'Everything Everywhere All At Once' was nominated for The Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, alongside 'Babylon', 'The Banshees of Inisherin', 'The Fabelmans' and 'Women Talking'. The movie made history for winning the maximum number of SAG awards, the maximum a movie has ever won.
