'Making The Cut': Naomi Campbell terms Troy and Joshua's print-heavy collection a 'recipe of disaster'

When it comes to creativity, how much is too much? We will probably never have one solid answer to that because in fashion it really depends on how well a designer is able to achieve a balance between colors, patterns, silhouettes, fabrics. Basically, everything.
Troy Arnold and Joshua Hupper are two people coming from different worlds of style. And them getting together would have been a fashion explosion, except it was a damp squib. As they went fabric shopping, they seemed invested in bold, ornate, patterns and colors that were clashing with each other. They were content with their shopping cart and immediately left the premises for the atelier.
While at work, both parties realized one was working for the other. Even though Joshua was doing a lot of running around, helping Troy fix their looks for the runway, it seemed as though he was really depending on Troy to pull it off. Sure, it was a lot of learning for Joshua almost to the point that it felt like he was an 'assistant' to Troy but he was more than happy to support him with what he needed to get the job done.
There was a lot of hard work involved, but the judges - Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, Joseph Altuzarra, Carine Roitfeld, Heidi Klum - were far from impressed. When asked to explain their choice of fabrics, they said they went for the ones that didn't look matched at all. The pieces from their collection looked as if they were from three different collections and there was no cohesiveness at all, which bothered the judges, especially Naomi.
"There is no connection in either of these outfits. You seem to like the not-matching fabrics. But I think it's gone to become a recipe of disaster," she said, while Carine commented that if the duo wished to design for the women then they will have to understand the women first and how they want to look and dress.
Defending their work, Troy said that they were going for an explosion of prints and the idea was to have them clash with each other. Nicole cut him short, saying: "I work with prints all the time. House of Harlow is a print-heavy brand. Like, I want to say something positive, but these prints make zero sense."
Based on their looks, Josh was shown the door. More like, he left the show voluntarily. He wasn't unhappy but he surely knew that the judges were not in favor of him moving ahead in the competition.
