'Lost in Space' Season 2 Episode 3 review: The Robinsons find themselves in another case of mad science gone wrong

There is an element of mystery and horror in 'Echoes'. It may not be the gut-wrenching horror, but rather the sinking feeling when you realize you're in a desolate land, except it really isn't.

This review contains spoilers for Ep. 3: 'Echoes'

There is an element of mystery and horror in 'Echoes'. It may not be the gut-wrenching horror, but rather the sinking feeling when you realize you're in a desolate land, except it really isn't.  For all the joy about jump-starting the Jupiter and the realizing the Resolute was actually close to them to dock, the Robinsons hopes and happiness is short-lived as they see an empty Resolute— nothing but an empty world.  And it takes only a few minutes to sink in they aren't alone.

'Echoes' also sees the space drama kick up the suspense factor a notch higher. Amidst all this, there is still plenty of room for family emotion and a bit of storyline for Dr. Smith (Parker Posey). The evil doctor now stuck in conflict whether to remain crooked or turn over a new leaf is fighting with the demons of the past. She wanders around the Resolute after breaking free from the Jupiter and erases all traces of her crimes. However, it does look like she still may embrace the dark side. Meanwhile, the Robinsons after a bit of a scare from the injured Scarecrow, manage to reunite

Now the mystery surrounding the Resolute is partly explained when the colonists realize they are attacked by a Scarecrow (another term for the SAR) and that there is a secret behind it. The Resolute was built around the alien technology that was found by the colonists and humans and a bid to reverse-engineer the technology failed. In a way, the episode is a classic example of mad science gone wrong. However, it does form a concrete plot point for the season and it puts the Robinsons right in the middle of it.

The colonists are now seeking temporary refuge in a planet and Ben Adler, chief of advanced systems and artificial intelligence (played by JJ Feilds) gives the Robinsons a chance to help figure out what exactly is happening with the Resolute and help them out. While this becomes the new mission, the family members still have their own personal battles to face. Will (Maxwell Jenkins) is still strongly convinced the Robot is alive while Judy (Taylor Russell) is bent on proving to herself and the world that she is a medic more than a stock supplies carrier.

After two episodes that project the Robinsons as science heroes, they are now in the middle of a deadly mystery and how it unfolds makes the series an interesting watch. For now, it's just about strapping in for the ride the Robinsons have decided to take us on.

'Lost in Space' Season 2  is now available for streaming on Netflix.
