'Jeopardy! Greatest Of All Time': James Holzhauer pays tribute to 'greatest host' Alex Trebek in his final answer

While Alex may not have choked up as he did when he saw Dhruv Gaur's 'We (love) you, Alex', fans are sure to have loved seeing the special moment

The third night of the limited series, 'Jeopardy! Greatest Of All Time' aired on ABC on January 9 night, with Ken Jennings winning for the second time due to his massive lead from the first match.

Jennings' win was clear to the other contestants, James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter as well, and they chose to use their final Jeopardy answers from the second match to have a little fun, and for some fans, leading to an "aww" moment.

While James started the second match well, a few missteps led to him coming in third place. Asked for his answer for the second final Jeopardy round of the night, James had written, "Who is the GHOST? (Greatest Host Of Syndicated TV)".

James's answer to his own question was, of course, Alex Trebek, but he decided to be a bit more cheeky by starting to write Pat Sajak's name (the host of 'Wheel of Fortune') before striking it out.

Holzhauer's move earned him a few laughs. And while Alex may not have choked up as he did when he saw Dhruv Gaur's tribute, fans at home are sure to have loved seeing the special moment.

When Gaur's episode was taped in September 2019, Alex had just announced to the world that he was battling pancreatic cancer again. In his final Jeopardy round, he chose to write "We (love) you, Alex," instead of an answer to the question.

One fan wrote, "James was going for an "Aw" moment... until Alex caught James writing and crossing out Pat Sajak as the G.H.O.S.T. (Greatest Host of Syndicated Television). Then it became the "Jeopardy! Comedy Hour". #JeopardyGOAT." Another tweeted, "That was nice of @James_Holzhauer in Final Jeopardy calling Alex Trebek the Greatest Host Of Syndicated TV!! #JeopardyGOAT."

Brad Rutter also decided to take part in the fun, writing for his second final Jeopardy answer, "ken es el hombre," paying his tribute to the Eagles. This led to Alex telling the viewers at home that it's time for the "Jeopardy comedy hour".

While Holzhauer's moment may not have been as emotional as Gaur's, it's certain to stay in many fans' minds, with many watching the 'Greatest Of All Time' tournament with dread, hoping the best for longtime host Alex Trebek.

The next episode of 'Jeopardy! Greatest Of All Time' will air on January 14 on ABC at 8/7c.
