'It's WEIRD': Kelly Clarkson and Jewel Kilcher get candid on holidaying solo as single mothers
UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIFORNIA: Singers Kelly Clarkson and Jewel Kilcher are both single mothers who share custody of children with their ex-husbands, and they both agree on how peculiar it feels to not have their children around for holidays. The first American Idol winner and the ‘Foolish Games’ singer sat down to talk on the former’s eponymous talk show, 'The Kelly Clarkson Show', where Jewel spoke about how she feels and copes with sending her son Kase Murray, 11, to be with his dad for the holidays.
Jewel shares son Kase with ex-husband Ty Murray, with whom she was married to for six years between 2008 and 2014. Clarkson herself is divorced from her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, with whom she was married for eight years between 2013 and 2021. The pair share two children, River Rose, 8 and Remington Alexander, 6.

"I've been divorced for seven years, so my ex keeps my son for Thanksgiving and I have him for Christmas and it's really great," Jewel explained, according to Yahoo! News. "But it's a trip to get used to being alone for a holiday like that and all my family are in Alaska," she added. However, she joked about going on to “bring the show down” with “tiny violins” and quipped that it wasn’t “too bad.”
The show’s host Clarkson also admitted that it is “weird” for her to send her children away to her ex-husband’s home for the holidays. "It was weird because you've always had a kid there," Clarkson said. "And then all of the sudden, you're alone," she added. She then went on to laugh and say, "At first, it's weird and then you're like, 'OK, I can do things.’ It's kind of incredible. You do get a little me-time."
Jewel agreed, noting, "I feel like it must be good preparation for empty nest syndrome." 'The Masked Singer' star went on add, "It forces me to invest and I would do things before I had a child! I suddenly seem to forget what I did. I'm alone and I'm like, 'What did I do? I did things.'" She continued, "But you get better at it."
Both singers have a sweet relationship with their children, with Jewel’s connection with her son being lauded recently when she sung with her son on her return to 'The Masked Singer' for the Holiday Special. The pair cutely sang a duet of 'Hands' together and at the end of the performance, her son hugged Jewel tight and said, “I love you, Mom."
