Is there really Episode 9 in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5? Rumors swirl after jaw-dropping cliffhanger finale
The epic journey of 'Stranger Things' came to an end with a major showdown between Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the Party. However, fans are still finding it hard to let go of the fictional world of Hawkins and their favorite characters. While the creator duo, Matt Duffer and Ross made it clear that Season 5 would be the last, a conspiracy theory suggests that there might be a hidden Episode 9.
The conspiracy theory claims the 'Stranger Things' finale, 'The Rightside Up,' was a Vecna-created illusion, and the real ending may come as a secret Episode 9. Notably, fans point to subtle details, like the students' hand positions at graduation, as clues that Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) and the others are still under Vecna's curse, as per Fandom Wire. Other supposed clues supporting the Episode 9 theory include the recurring Whatzit game (linked to Henry Creel), characters sporting Henry-like hairstyles, and Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) graduating despite being in a coma for two years.
Fans note that after Eleven's apparent death, a heartbeat and a ticking sound hint at Vecna, fueling the theory that the finale is a hoax. Some even speculate Episode 9 could release on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, tied to a Dungeons & Dragons roll, though Netflix and the Duffer Brothers have confirmed the series is officially complete. "This is a complete story. It's done," Matt told Variety in a 2025 interview.
Ross added, “When we finish a season, there's always the safety net of 'Oh, we get to go back to these characters. That is going to be the hardest thing to adjust to when it's January 1 and it’s like, 'Oh, we don't have that!'" Although several 'Stranger Things' spinoffs are in development, there is no evidence to suggest that a surprise Episode 9 is planned.
The creator duo also opened up in a different Variety interview about Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) ambiguous ffae, as Ross explained, "Eleven represents, in a lot of ways, the magic of childhood. And we knew for our kids to be able to grow up, the magic had to leave Hawkins. There was never a version that we had written where it was Eleven down in that basement. It was never going to be that simple and that easy. It was finding a way to come up with an ending where it was not that simple but also bittersweet, and that there was hope there." Matt added a lighter note, saying, "Speaking of Eleven, Millie keeps Facetiming, disrupting the Zoom."
