Is Suho misinterpreted for clout? Fans defend EXO leader's 'insensitive' comments over Seoul rains
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: When it comes to words being misconstrued with translations, K-pop idols have had their fair share of controversies all due to mistranslations. Recently it was BTS leader RM who pointed out that his words about BTS' "temporary hiatus" had been mistranslated to mean "indefinite hiatus". Now comes another report from SM Entertainment's EXO where the leader Suho was called insensitive for his comments.
On August 20, idols from SM Entertainment attended the label's concert - 'SMTOWN Live 2022: SMCU Express' in Suwon. This was EXO's first appearance as a group with five out of the six active members of the boy group in attendance. With maknae Sehun missing from the show, there was already a lot of controversy around the event. Now, Korean media claims that Suho's "insensitive" comments mocking the torrential rains that took place in South Korea are being criticized by Knetz.

Did EXO Suho mock the Seoul floods?
In the second week of August this year, Seoul, South Korea recorded the highest rainfall in 80 years. The torrential rain caused a lot of damage to life and property in the city and was taken seriously by the Korean government too. But, Suho's recent comment about it is being interpreted negatively by the media. At the show, during his performance, Suho reportedly said, "It's such a relief that it's not raining today. Everyone you know that it's in my power right? I'm so sorry for some time ago."
This comes from the time when EXO made its debut and each member was associated with a 'super power' in the EXO Universe. Suho's superpower is water and the singer was making a comment about being responsible for the rains. According to fans, since K-pop concerts often get canceled in South Korea due to rains, the EXO leader was taking a jab at the rainfall from the last few days in contrast to the disastrous floods from weeks ago.
'Y'all twist Suho's words to throw him under the bus'
Fans are now calling out Korean media for constantly twisting the singer's words in order to sensationalize him when EXO-Ls are currently in unrest due to the mistreatment of members like Sehun and Chen. One fan said, "Stop twisting his words!! Go nd read the real translation!!! Attention seeker." One more fan asked, "What's with the silent beef with suho???? He's talking about the rain from a few days before the concert." One fan said, "Suho was talking about the rain not the flood , but y'all like to twist people's words and throw them under the bus." Another fan said, "Knetz need to worry about the people blacklisting Sam not worrying over a f****g harmless joke."
One fan recalled Suho's message during the flood saying, "People make a controversy out of everything!!! "Everyone, there's so much rain outside. The whole country is harmed severely.. Please take care of your health and be careful of rainy roads.I hope that all damage are resolved soon" he said this too but they want to just hate!!" One fan said, "This is ridiculous." Another fan said, "How to generate publicity - just post controversial comment on Suho, the leader of one of the famous Kpop group. Your article will be a hit. Connecting Suho's comment with recent flood is very cheap way of reporting & obviously distorting facts." One fan wondered, "No but how can they translate the opposite way? how many times have they done this?" One responded, "They use google translate. and the tweak it. i don't think they are fluent."
