What is a ward in 'Bridgerton'? How Sophie's complicated childhood shapes her story in Season 4
True to expectations, 'Bridgerton' Season 4 Part 1 made a stunning debut with another forbidden love story. The new season opens with Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) falling in love with Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha), unaware of her true identity, at Violet Bridgerton's (Ruth Gemmell) masquerade ball. Soon, it's revealed that Sophie is a maid, casting a shadow over their budding relationship. However, it was also established that Sophie was Lord Penwood's (Arthur Lee) ward, leaving viewers wondering what a 'ward' truly means in this context.
Before joining the staff at Penwood House, Sophie had a very different life as the ward of Lord Penwood, her biological father, revealing that she was raised in nobility. "Sophie is the illegitimate child of Lord Penwood. Her mother was a maid," Yerin Ha explained. For those who are curious, a ward is a child placed under the care of a guardian, often someone who is not a biological relative. By calling her his ward, Lord Penwood avoided the scandal of publicly acknowledging her as his daughter while still providing her with all the benefits of her bloodline.
Flashbacks show that Sophie understood Lord Penwood was her father, despite the 'ward' pretense, as per Tudum by Netflix. Sophie's privileged childhood shifts when Lord Penwood marries widow Araminta (Katie Leung), who must navigate a blended family with her daughters, Posy (Isabella Wei) and Rosamund Li (Michelle Mao). Araminta quickly realizes that Sophie is actually Penwood's child and worries about the impact on her own daughters' future financial security. After the earl dies, Araminta keeps Sophie in the household, but no longer as a ward, but as a maid.
All of Sophie's former privileges vanish, and she is forced to serve her stepmother and stepsisters. Showrunner Jess Brownell shared, "Sophie's forced to work for a family who does not treat her with the respect that the maids get at Bridgerton House [or] even Featherington House." He added, "So she's put in this situation where she has to really think on her feet every day to survive. Araminta Gun is the lady of the house, and she has very exacting standards." Araminta views Sophie's role as a maid as a practical compromise rather than an act of cruelty. "I don’t think Araminta thinks that she’s doing it out of malice," Leung says, while adding, "She decides to have her as a maid in the household to feed her, clothe her, put a roof over her head, which she thinks will suffice."
For Sophie, however, the emotional toll is profound after losing both her parents and her former life. "She's a woman who has lived through a lot and by those circumstances has had to find a way to survive," says Brownell. Notably, 'Bridgerton' Season 4 Part 2 will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, February 26, completing the season with four episodes and bringing the total episode count to eight, as per RadioTimes. Part 2 includes episodes 5-8: 'Yes or No', 'The Passing Winter', 'The Beyond', and 'Dance in the Country'.
