MANHASSET, NEW YORK: Prince Harry's ghostwriter JR Moehringer was slammed on social media after he defended the royal's 416-page bombshell memoir 'Spare' for its factual errors. Apparently, Moehringer called those errors "blurry memories." In his autobiography, Harry made a glaring mistake when he mentioned that before his mother's death in 1997, she left him an Xbox on his birthday. He readily conceded in his memoir, “That’s the story, anyway. It’s appeared in many accounts of my life, as gospel, and I have no idea if it’s true.”

The Pulitzer-winning features writer and novelist quoted lines from Mary Karr's 'The Art of Memoir' to defend Harry's statement. The excerpt read, “The line between memory and fact is blurry, interpretation and fact. There are inadvertent mistakes of those kinds out the wazoo.” The Manhasset native who reportedly met the prince through George Clooney, has a memoir of his own which is called 'The Tender Bar'. It got published in 2005 and was later adapted into a film, starring Ben Affleck.

'Recollections may vary'

Slamming the ghostwriter for the slew of errors in the memoir, the internet reacted to Moehringer's justification for defending the factual errors. Reacting to the author's tweet, one user wrote, "Recollections vary!!! The Royal Family was very correct about that statement. Maybe you'll should have mentioned this at the start of the book."

"Dress it up whichever way you want but I think you know your credit has been harked!," a user reacted while another wrote, "Embarrassing. You can’t just absolve responsibility and decency with a quote like that. Cheap shot." One user wrote, "Having anything to do with someone who is loose with the truth is a challenge. Sadly you got caught up in it."

"#PrinceHarry says this is the other side of the story “My Truth” talking about private details and presenting them as fact but even his ghostwriter is saying #Recollections May Vary. How Harry sees things didn’t go the way it’s written, it’s not the truth. #Ghosting #Spare," someone opined.

"So as usual it’s not Harry’s fault. It’s the ghostwriter. Didn’t Harry read this and approve it?," a user remarked and another wrote, "If you have memory problems, surely you shouldn't be pretending to write a factual book. Imagine ruining people's lives with untruths and then blaming your memory."

"Seriously? You're an award-winning writer! You must have been paid very well to write this mess and yet you didn't fact-check yourself! How do you get away with slander?" a user wrote.
