'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny': Here's why franchise's final film won't have a post-credits scene

Unlike many newer movies, 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' will stay true to previous films in the franchise and avoid a post-credit scene

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: With Harrison Ford’s last adventure ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, the movie promises to deliver a thrilling end to an exhilarating journey that previously took viewers through treacherous jungles, ancient ruins and lost civilizations. The last movie of the franchise will tie up all the loose ends and wrap up the franchise.

In ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, the titular character finds himself in an unfamiliar world as America in 1969 presents a stark contrast to the 1930s he knows. With moon missions and advanced technology, Indy wonders if there is still a place for him. The ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise in 2023 faces a similar challenge as it tries to adapt to newer expectations for blockbuster films. The rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its post-credits scenes has shaped audience perceptions. As ‘Dial of Destiny’ embraces the retro-adventure spirit of the original films, viewers may wonder if it incorporates a post-credit scene, aligning with modern standards and teasing future installments.

Will there be post-credits scene in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’?

‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ has been widely promoted as the conclusive and final adventure for the legendary adventurer. Initially, there were plans to use the fifth ‘Indiana Jones’ film as a launching point for a new era of the franchise, similar to how ‘The Force Awakens’ revitalized the ‘Star Wars’ series. However, it appears that these ambitions have shifted. Instead of setting up future movies and spin-offs, ‘Dial of Destiny’ is positioned as a swansong for the franchise under the Disney banner. As a result, it's not surprising that the film does not feature any post-credit scenes or teasers for future adventures. The ending of ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is crafted to bring closure to the narrative, without leaving loose ends or setting up future storylines. The focus is on delivering a satisfying conclusion to Indiana Jones' journey rather than extending the franchise indefinitely.

Additionally, the absence of unresolved narrative elements by the time the end credits roll further diminishes the need for post-credit sequences. ‘Dial of Destiny’ ties up loose ends and wraps up character arcs within the main storyline, eliminating the necessity for additional scenes during or after the credits.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's post-credits approach aligns with James Mangold's style

James Mangold's decision to eschew credit sequences in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is consistent with his filmmaking style and personal beliefs about the purpose of movies. In recent interviews, Mangold expressed his disinterest in making films solely to set up future installments or contribute to interconnected narratives. He values self-contained stories and meaningful conclusions rather than infinite teasers for future adventures. This approach is evident in Mangold's previous works as well. For instance, in ‘Logan’, he chose to conclude the film with a poignant ending that symbolized the passing of a cinematic legend, rather than using credit sequences to tease potential future stories. Even in ‘The Wolverine’, while there was a mid-credit sequence teasing a future ‘X-Men’ film, Mangold acknowledged his skepticism towards mainstream credit scenes, noting that they often undercut the movies they accompany.

Besides, the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise has historically avoided credit sequences, and Lucasfilm has maintained a consistent approach of not altering this aspect. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that ‘Dial of Destiny’ follows suit and does not include end-credit scenes or sequel teases, staying true to the franchise's established conventions.
