VANCOUVER, CANADA: The CW’s modern reboot action-adventure drama ‘Kung Fu’ premiered in April 2021 and garnered an incredible viewership. The series portrays diverse representations of strong female leads, drama, action, and spirituality. ‘Kung Fu’ is known to be the first show with an Asian female lead on The CW. Sadly, after completing three seasons, the network confirmed the cancellation of the show.

‘Kung Fu’ centers around young Chinese-American woman who drop out of college to travel to a Shaolin monastery in China after a life-altering experience. She learns martial arts and mindfulness practices that help her find her true purpose in life. However, upon returning to her hometown in San Francisco, she discovers that her family is in danger. She must use her newfound skills to protect them and her community from a local crime syndicate. The show is directed by Christina M Kim and stars Olivia Liang as Nicky Chen, Shannon Dang as Althea Shen, Yvonne Chapman as Zhilan, Vanessa Yao as Mia Yang, Eddie Liu as Henry Yan, Gavin Stenhouse as Evan Hartley, Ben Levin as Bo, Tzi Ma as Jin Shen, and Tan Kheng Hua as Mei-Li Shen. After the news of the show’s cancellation, Olivia Liang took to Instagram to share a tribute to the show.

'I Love you Nicky Chen'

Olivia Liang, an Asia female lead in ‘Kung Fu’, opened up about the cancellation of the show after running for three seasons. The actress shared a sweet post, paying tributes to the series and bidding farewell to the cast, writers, showrunners, and the entire crew. In her Instagram post, she said, “It has been the honor of my f****g life to work with this group of humans. We made a historic three seasons of a show.” She continued, “First predominantly Asian cast in a one-hour network drama. First Asian American female showrunner.” Although she was sad about the news, she expressed her gratitude for being a cast member of this amazing show.

She added, “Don’t have enough words (or room in this carousel) to express my gratitude to my show-runners, my writers, my cast, my stunt team, my f****g crew… I love you all. I truly won the lottery. They are all the kindest, smartest, funniest, most hard working people in the biz. I am so so so proud of the work we did. Thank you to everyone who invited us into your homes and watched our little show that could. cheers to Kung Fu, the show that changed my life forever. I love you Nicky Shen.”

'Kung Fu deserved better'

While The CW has been announcing the cancellation of many shows, ‘Kung Fu’ was lucky enough to have surpassed three seasons and give its audience an unforgettable storyline. Many fans are sad and disappointed; taking to social media, a Twitter user wrote, “I don't understand why they couldn't find a home for Kung Fu it's a great show”. Another fan tweeted, “This really hurts. I’m so sorry everyone”, while one more fan added, “#KungFu was a groundbreaking show that had so much heart”.

Some fans have signed a petition to renew the next season of ‘Kung Fu’ using hashtags like #SaveKungFu. A Twitter fan wrote, “Kung Fu deserved better”, while another tweeted, “Please please please such a great show. It's such a great show with the best characters we need season 4. Thanks for the great 3 seasons!!!!” One more fan added, “The CW is really missing out by canceling Kung Fu. A great show with so much heart. I will miss it for sure!”
