'I am Groot' on Disney +: How Vin Diesel was 'discovered' at a New York theater
Marvel Studios is all set to bring forth the highly awaited fantasy short series ‘I am Groot’ on Disney Plus. The series official trailer was revealed by Kevin Feige at the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2022 panel on July 23.
Action megastar Vin Diesel will give voice to the tree-like alien superhero character Groot. This series, part of the coveted Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been helmed and also written by Kirsten Lepore. ‘Fast & Furious’ alum Vin Diesel has been voicing Groot from the very start, since 2014. For those who are unaware, Disney has featured this character in several films like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’ Diesel also portrayed Groot in the animated film ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet.’

Vin Diesel is one of Hollywood’s biggest and most loved action stars with an illustrious career that took off 20 years ago. While ardent ‘Fast & Furious’ fans love his nuanced performance as Dominic Toretto, very few people might actually know how this cinema icon was 'discovered' as an actor when he was a child, albeit accidentally, by a theatre play director.
Vin Diesel was caught trashing New York theater
According to Looper.com article dated March 2022, much before his career as an actor in Hollywood, Vin Diesel’s love and passion for arts and cinema was sparked when he was only seven years old, thanks to a play director who believed in second chances. It so happened that as a child, he sneaked into a Manhattan theater house with a group of friends. They all had been destroying and damaging that theater like their own personal playground when a play director caught them in the act.
In an old interview with CNN dated August 2002, Diesel said, “I thought she was going to call the cops.” He also added how she tried to persuade all of them to try acting and recalled, “She said, 'If you guys want to play here, come every day at four o'clock and learn your lines.”
James Gunn opened up about Baby Groot in the MCU
In an old Comicbook.com interview dated September 2017, the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2’ director James Gunn opened up on baby Groot and had said, “The guy playing Groot was a stand-in on the last movie and so we just kind of always forgot he was there. He doesn't talk very much, so you're doing all these scenes and when we have the scenes in the movie where they turn to Groot and Groot's like, 'Why are you forgetting me?' That's really what we felt like while we were shooting the first film.”
He had also shared, “Now everyone knows Groot so well that we have much larger awareness, me and the cast, of a baby Groot being there at all times. And him being one of the members in the scene... I think he's a better-written character than the first Groot in some ways. Not that he was poorly written at all, but I think he's just a more complete character.”
‘I am Groot’ will be released globally by Disney+ on August 10, 2022
