Hulu 'Deep Water' Ending Explained: Did Vic kill all of Melinda's lovers?
Hulu’s highly-anticipated erotic thriller ‘Deep Water’ has finally been released. Although it might not be everybody’s cup of tea, the movie manages to create an atmosphere where you are continuously guessing who’s the killer.
Based on the book of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, the movie revolves around Vic (Ben Affleck) and Melinda Van Allen (Ana De Armas), a married couple who are living a happy life with their daughter. However, everything is not what it seems like. Their married life is not happy and is loveless. Their marriage is only working because of an arrangement that says that Melinda is allowed to as many lovers as she wants. The only condition is that her “sexual adventures” should not affect the family.

However, Melinda is taking this arrangement to a whole new level by having a new sex buddy every night. Vic is getting impatient with what he’s seeing and not liking it. He used hard-hitting and witty one-liners to scare away his loves. He also tells them that he killed one of Melinda’s friends who got closer to his wife. Although it is a lie, the whole neighborhood knows about it and talks about it.
So, what happens when he meets three of Melinda’s partners? Does he do anything repulsive? Let’s see how the movie ended.
‘Deep Water’ Ending Explained: Did Vic really kill all of Melinda’s lovers?
At one of the parties, we see Melinda meeting one of his friends Joel, and starts dancing with him. Vic is really happy to see her happy. However, a few moments later he sees them kissing each other. That’s when we get to know that their marriage is nothing how it seems to be. Joel meets Vic and says thank you for inviting him to the party. He also says that his wife is really an amazing host and a friend. In return, Vic says that he shouldn’t get closer to his wife or else, he’ll end up like Marty. Joel is clueless. Vic tells him that he killed Marty because he got too close to Melinda. Joel gets scared and leaves the party.
Melinda talks to Vic and asks what did he say to him? He says, he said nothing to him and they start to enjoy the party. Upon returning home, Melinda says that he should apologize to him when Joel comes to dinner. Joel comes to dinner and they start eating. Vic and Melinda are throwing sarcastic punches at each other while Joel told them his new business. But when they finish, Melinda and Joel go to a room and start kissing each other. Vic sees that and goes to the kitchen to wash dishes. Melinda comes and tells him to talk to Joel as she is really drunk.
He talks to him and immediately says that his Uber has arrived and he’s not spending the night in this house.
A few days later, it is found that Joel has left the county for his business. So, Melinda has already found someone else. While visiting their daughter’s football game, Vic gets a call that his wife transferred $3,500 to someone’s account. He gets to know that she transferred the money to a man named Charlie (Jacob Elordi) who teaches her piano. Yes, he does, apart from having sex with her. Vic visits the restaurant where he plays piano and sees Melinda there too.
He visits there again and this time, he is with his best friend Grant (Lil Rel Howery). Vic talks to Charlie and appreciates his skills. A few moments later, we see a party happening in one of Vic’s friend’s houses and Melinda has invited Charlie there as well. She introduces him as the man who teaches her piano. He plays the piano and everybody dances. Vic has a mysterious smirk on his face while watching Melinda. Melinda starts in front of Vic and starts moving her hips slowly over his crotch area. Vic understands what she’s doing and goes with the flow. However, Vic starts to have dreams in which he can see Charlie and Melinda having sex.
The same night, they all are having fun at the poolside. Melinda and Charlie are inside the pool, enjoying themselves with each other. Vic is really annoyed to see that. Rain starts pouring down and everyone runs inside. But Vic and Charlie don’t. Vic confronts Charlie and punches him.
Vic returns inside the house, but Charlie seems to be still out there. Vic hurts his finger while taking a cookie straight out of the pan. Melinda goes out on the balcony and screams loudly as she sees Charlie’s body in the pool. Everybody runs toward him and tries to save him, but he has already died. Police arrive and question everyone. Melinda says that Vic must have killed him because they were having an affair.
Meanwhile, one of their mutual friends, Don Wilson (Tracy Letts), also believes that it was Vic who killed Charlie. So, Melinda and Don start working together by hiring a private investigator. But Don’s wife, Kelly Wilson (Kristen Connelly), tells him that Don also believes that he killed Charlie and is spending time with Melinda to discuss it. Vic finds out that the car following him is of a private investigator and sees him and his wife inside a diner. He sits with them and talks with them. Melinda tells Vic that he is a psychiatrist. So, Vic asks the man if his wife is schizophrenic? To which, he says, she doesn’t have the symptoms. They all laugh nervously and Vic gets out of the restaurant.
He goes and meets the Wilsons and sits with him while they have their meal. Vic accuses Don of hiring PI for implying that he killed Charlie and threatened him if he does that again, it won’t be good for him. He says sorry to Don’s wife and his friend Kelly, who is frustrated with what her husband has done.
Days go by and Melinda finds a new sexual partner named Tony (Finn Wittrock). However, they are more than just “sex buddies”. They were planning to move to Brazil.
Vic and Melinda were ready for a divorce, but Vic didn’t want to leave Melinda. Vic talks about snails with Tony and shows him his backyard in which he has numerous snails and takes care of them. They have a great meal together and Vic sees them dancing sensually. The next day, Vic meets Tony and says that they should go to a place that Vic and Melinda used to visit during their college time. They enter the woods and Vic is driving furiously. They reach the place and when he asks where is Melinda? Vic throws a rock at her.
Tony’s face is covered in blood and he knows that Vic is furious with him for having a sexual relationship with his wife. As soon Vic moves forward to hit him again, Tony moves backward and accidentally falls off the cliff. He dies on the spot. Vic ties up his body and throws it at the bottom of the river.
As soon as he reaches home, he talks about Tony with Melinda and says that he likes him. Melinda starts showing him love and they all go for a family picnic. When their daughter gets close to the river, Vic sees that a part of Tony’s cloth covered in blood is floating and coming out. They leave the place immediately, but on the way, Melinda says that she forgotten her red scarf there.
Vic goes there and sees the river. He sees the body can be seen floating and he tries to bury his body inside the water again. At that moment, Don comes and sees him. He says that he has found the red scarf and as soon as he asks what he’s doing here, Tony’s body comes up and Don runs toward his car. Vic goes after Don, but he is in a car while Vic is on a bicycle. The chase ends in a tragic accident that sees Don losing his life.
Elsewhere, Melinda goes and checks out Vic at the place where he keeps the snails. In one of the boxes, she sees the wallet of Tony, which means he was responsible for his death. The movie ends with Melinda setting the purse on fire and living her life like she used to.
