'Sunny' is based on Colin O'Sullivan's novel 'The Dark Manual', released in 2018.

Apple TV+ had announced the adaptation in February 2022, followed by introducing Rashida Jones as a lead cast member and executive producer of the series.

In 'The Dark Manual', the Japan based author tells a fictional tale of Susie Sakamoto who grapples with the grief of her missing family and finds a new companion in a domestic robot to uncover the mystery.

Taking inspiration from Colin O'Sullivan's novel, Apple TV+'s series revolves around Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan.

Her life turns upside down when her family disappears in a plane crash. Her husband's electronics company "compensates" her for the tragedy by giving her a domestic robot named Sunny.

Though initially she resents the robot, they eventually develop an unusual friendship as they pair up to uncover the mystery of what actually happened to her family. This journey will lead her to a dark world she never knew existed.

The official synopsis for 'Sunny' reads, "The life of an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As consolation, she's given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband's electronic company."

The series will have a total of ten episodes. A subscription to Apple TV+, which starts at $9.99 per month, is required to stream 'Sunny'.
