Who was Todd Meadows? ‘Deadliest Catch’ production concludes as crew member, 25, dies during filming
The Discovery Channel show 'Deadliest Catch' was recently hit with tragedy after 25-year-old deckhand Todd Meadows died during production on February 25, 2026. The deceased deckhand was working on the Aleutian Lady, which is one of the vessels filmed by the long-running television show, and was fishing for crabs in the Bering Sea. As reported by Deadline, the details surrounding Meadows' death are still unclear at the time of this writing.
Meadows was the most recent addition to the ship's crew and is survived by his wife and three children. It has further been reported that the show was filming Season 22 when the unfortunate incident took place. Meadows was working under the supervision of Captain Rick Shelford and his crew on board the Aleutian Lady. The production of the show has concluded, as the Aleutian Lady was one of the last vessels that was filmed by the show during the final days of its production cycle, as per Deadline.
Captain Shelford has been a part of 'Deadliest Catch' since Season 19 of the Discovery Channel show and referred to Meadows' death as the "most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady." He added, "His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away. His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always." A Discovery Channel spokesperson said in a statement to People, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time."
'Deadliest Catch' is produced by Original Productions, owned by Fremantle. This isn't the first time that the issue of safety has arisen during the production of the long-running show. During the previously aired Season 19, the captain of the Brenna A vessel, Sean Dawyer, was slated to be the captain of the Aleutian Lady alongside Shelford. Speaking in front of the cameras during the season's third episode, Dawyer remarked, "I’m feeling like this is chaos, and I don’t necessarily feel like it’s a good idea to take off, I honestly feel like there’s some corners that are being cut, and I’m concerned." In his reply to Dawyer, Shelford commented, "There is no safety issue at all." Dawyer subsequently left the show for good.
