Quaid's Medical Nightmare
With two failed marriages behind him, Quaid married for the third time with Kimberly Buffington in 2004. Three years later, they welcomed fraternal twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, via surrogate. However, their blessing turned into a nightmare due to a medical mistake. The 10-day-old babies came home from the hospital and developed serious staph infections. The former couple was told to take their newborns to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where they were given antibiotics intravenously. Thomas and Zoe were accidentally given a massive dose of Heparin, an anticoagulant. Babies typically get 10 units, but Quaid's twins were mistakenly given 10,000 units. The drug is used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots.
Dennis Quaid filed a lawsuit
After the near fatal incident with his children, Quaid and his ex-wife filed a lawsuit against the makers of a blood thinner given to their newborn twins in an accidental massive overdose.
The suit against Baxter Healthcare Corp, a unit of Baxter International Inc, accused the drug maker of failing to put clear distinguishing labels on its 10-unit and 10,000-unit vials of heparin and failing to recall the product after three other infants died because of a mix-up.
The actor sought at least $50,000 in damages. It was faith and prayer that helped his children survive the nightmare.
A movie based on faith and survival, 'On a Wing and a Prayer', is soon to premiere on Prime Video. The film stars Quaid in the lead role of Doug White. It traces the journey of him trying to safely land a plane and rescue his entire family from insurmountable danger after their pilot unexpectedly dies mid-flight.
'On a Wing and a Prayer' will air on April 7 on Prime Video.
